511? I thought only 495 were known. Turtwig A (talk | contribs) 21:29, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like someone screwed up and
{{PokémonInfoboxNoncat}}is now producing categories. 梅子❀✿ 22:26, 16 April 2010 (UTC)- The external links part of the infobox shouldn't be on the non-cat infobox. Still, this should have 496 considering I'm using it in my userspace. Eventually over the summer it should count up to 990, when we do the full revamp of the Pokémon pages, and then drop back down to 495 when we move them all. TTEchidna 22:40, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
Need
Is this needed anymore? Generation Vs wave is here, and everything is revealed. It's Turtwig A! My talk or wiki edits 01:24, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
650?
Unless Baby Kangaskhan or Venustoise have finally been made into Pokemon, there are 649, not 650, unless there is a new one I am not aware of...Vuvuzela2010 01:50, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
- Should be fixed now. Werdnae (talk) 02:13, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Does this even work?
I was looking at the Pokémon (species) article and it still said 659... It didn't change until I tried to edit it and pressed preview. It probably only calculates when the article is edited and not when the page is loaded. TorchicBlaziken (talk•edits) 21:50, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
- Works fine on the Legendary Pokémon page. Not sure why it's not working on the species page. --It's Funktastic~!話してください 22:03, 11 June 2013 (UTC)
Gen IX Update
Since Generation IX has been revealed, can someone please update this template to include Generation IX Pokémon to keep the template working correctly? -Ratboy Jr. (talk) 20:18, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
Slight Error
This template is currently one number off. There are currently 921 Pokémon that have been discovered, but the template reads 922. Can somebody please fix this? Thank you. :) -Ratboy Jr. (talk) 21:25, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
- The issue is that Generation I Pokémon currently contains 152 entries, due to User:Ebrunborg/Beedrill (Pokémon) being included despite being a user page. Atrius97 (talk) 21:37, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
Purpose
I'm not sure I quite understand what the point of this template is. When new Pokémon are announced and get added to the counter, it generally causes more problems than it solves for pages that use the template. For example, at the moment there are three Pokémon that have been announced but not released, which throws off the automatic calculations on all the Egg Group pages (e.g. Field (Egg Group) calculates how many Pokémon are in the Egg Group out of 1028, when logically it should be out of 1025 since the Egg Groups of the other three aren't known yet). I also had to remove the template here for a similar reason. What context is this template actually used in that wouldn't require other edits to be made to the page anyway when new Pokémon are added (thus defeating the point of having the template)? Am I missing something here? Hewer (talk) 23:59, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
- This template is most useful for pages where there isn't any new information to add, preventing us from having to edit a page just to change the number of Pokémon. For example, we know the types of the Gen X starters, so it makes sense to calculate the percentage of Pokémon of each type with the new starters included. Without this template, that would mean 15 extra edits - one to each type page besides Grass, Fire, and Water - just to adjust the total number of Pokémon. It's also helpful for general overview pages like Pokémon (species) to list the total number of Pokémon known without that page having to be updated every single time a new species is revealed.
- The problem, though, is when it's used in tandem with
{{CURRENTGEN}}, which isn't updated until the new games release (or someone manually writing out the current generation). That's how you get things like "as of Gen 9, there are x out of 1028 Pokémon that aren't part of an evolutionary line" which is factually incorrect because there are only 1025 Pokémon as of Gen 9. The problem is, if we got rid of the template, it then becomes infinitely harder to track which pages are using the total number of Pokémon and thus need to be updated when a new species is revealed or a new game comes out. Perhaps we could make a separate template that keeps track of the number of Pokémon released as of the current generation? Storm Aurora (talk) 20:44, 4 April 2026 (UTC)- Good idea, that would solve the issue. (I will say I have a similar problem with the "CURRENTGEN" template, since it's also largely used in contexts where other updates to the page would be needed anyway when the current generation changes.)
