On this page, it says Ash referenced Dawns Piplup. In the episode, he said 'I knew a Piplup'. This is not a direct reference and he could be referring to any other Piplup. - He said he knows "a Piplup", he's singling out an individual Piplup (of which he'd only know one of), not that he knows what a Piplup is. And as I said on your talk page, I wasn't sure what you meant in your edit summary here and assume you meant that the XY series is not canon.--ForceFire 04:32, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
