Lugia suddenly appears and challenges the two to a battle. Gold to tries to reason with it and explains that they need to go to Cianwood City to cure Ampharos. However, Lugia still insists on a battle and Slowking says that they must stay untill they defeat Lugia. Gold has Pikachu use Thunderbolt since Lugia is a flying type, but it does not affect Lugia. Croconow and Cyndaquil both try to use Water gun and Flame wheel but Lugia only restores itself, much to Chris' dismay. Gold and Chris manage to escape by diving through Slowking's pond. They try to fomr a strategy to win before Lugia sees them. Chris figures that Lugia is made of gas based on its having been afected by both the Water and Fire attacks, and surmises that its having been in rock was due to a water weakness. They then try to locate lava on the island to defeat Lugia. Lugia suddenly appears and compliments them on their discovery, and gives them the option to be spared but kept on the island or to die with it in the lava beneath the island on their feet. Gold refuses to be kept on the island, as Ampharos needs the medicine. Lugia crushes the island. Gold tells Remoraid and Croconaw to use Water Gun on their feet. Chris tries to help with Wooper. Suddenly, Lugia to their surprise is lying unharmed. It is revealed that the "Lugia" that was battled was illusionary. Slowking reveals that the place is subterranean and that Lugia keeps the island standing. Lugia also explains that it guards the island and that it is unwell. It then offers them anything they want. They ask Lugia to bring them to Cianwood City. The illusionary Lugia carries them, as Lugia, Slowking, and Blastoise along with some Sunflora wave. Chris wonders if they will ever return to the Whirl Islands, and Gold wants to battle Lugia again in the future.
