Eternal Rivals (Japanese: 王者に挑み続ける者 The One who Continues to Challenge the Monarch) was a time trial event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pair Raihan & Duraludon.
The "Raihan Poké Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Raihan & Duraludon from the beginning of the event to May 31, 2021.
During this event, players could challenge a battle that had a timer to try to achieve the fastest possible time. They would receive a grade based on how quickly the battle was completed, and each grade awarded a different number of points. Players could earn various rewards based on the total number of points accumulated. Players were granted three attempts per day to clear any of the main time trial battles; any unused attempts were rolled over to subsequent days. In addition to the main time trial battles, a Practice Match (Japanese: エキシビションマッチ) was also offered; this battle could be challenged an unlimited number of times and did not consume any stamina.
Event missions could be completed by clearing the battles in a certain amount of time. Completing these awarded players with new story areas and medals. Additional missions were added over the first week of the event's run, which awarded Gems for completing the battle quickly using sync pairs with certain theme skills.
Raihan & Duraludon received a ×2 bonus multiplier to all of their stats except HP when used in a time trial battle, and a ×2 bonus multiplier would be applied to the points earned upon completing a battle with them on the team.
Plot
With the onset of a new time trial event on the horizon, Raihan expresses his excitement to the player about the event and the prospect of beating Leon's high score. Raihan hones his Duraludon's skills against the player's Pikachu to prepare for the event. Gloria and Piers cross paths with Raihan and the player and offer to help each other train. Amazed by Duraludon's speed, Gloria and Piers suggest that Raihan continue to draw out its potential by setting it up against its natural rival—Tyranitar. The group seeks the one Trainer they know with a Tyranitar, Brock, for assistance. When they reach him, he is seen training with Jasmine and her Steelix, likewise giving her advice on her partner Pokémon. Brock and Raihan intitiate a battle with one another, and Raihan once again shows off Duraludon's excellent dodging abilities much to the surprise of Brock. The group stays and continues their training up to the day of the time trial event. In the city, Gloria and the player overhear Raihan complaining about losing his newly-earned record to Leon. Raihan vows to Leon and Gloria that he will continue to usurp any records that beat his, excited by the challenge behind it.

Raihan | Hey, I heard about something called a "time trial" while I was wandering around town. Do you know what that's all about? I see. I've never heard of battles like that before. While we're on the subject, do you happen to know who has the best time right now? |
(Raihan and the player check the leaderboard)
Raihan | What?! Leon?! If he's the one at the top of the leaderboard, I guess I'm going to have to get involved in this time trial thing myself. This must be fate! Let's see... What was your name again? |
(The player tells Raihan their name)
Raihan | Ah, right! <player>! How about joining me for some training? I'm pretty good at team battles, but I think I need a little practice to get used to battles where speed is key. Anyway, give me a shout whenever you're up for it! |

Raihan | Leon... I won't lose to you! |
Raihan | I'll beat him! The battle format doesn't matter! I have to beat Leon! You've got someone you absolutely don't want to lose to, either, right? Let's show our rivals what we're made of! |

(Forest; Raihan and the player battle)
Raihan | Bring the storm! My partner Pokémon will send everyone in the time trial flying! |
(Raihan knocks out the player's Pikachu)
Raihan | All right! Looks like I'm getting better at this timed battle thing! I bet you two are tired, too, huh. Let's take a little break, then. You were really fired up!: I was, wasn't I! I suppose I couldn't help myself, what with Leon in the top spot and all. You were like a dragon yourself!: You think so? I suppose I did get a little fired up, but I'm rather serious about beating Leon. He's not just the Champion of Galar–he's also my rival. Well, I call him my rival, but I've never actually beaten him in an official match back in Galar. All my selfies after we've battled are just pictures of me losing. What a drag, eh? Wanna see some of them? |
(Raihan shows the player some pictures)
Raihan | What do you think? I still look good even when I lose, don't I? But you beat most other people!: Yeah! Awesome, isn't it? They don't call me the strongest Gym Leader in Galar for nothing! Leon's the only one you can't beat?: Well, to tell you the truth, there is one other Trainer I can't beat. She's a Gym Leader who uses Ice types... Anyway, I've never been able to beat Leon in an official battle back in Galar. But I'll definitely take him down here in Pasio's time trials! It also seems like Leon's got something new in the works these days... I don't know the details, but I do know that he's hoping to use his experience here on Pasio to do something new back in Galar. That's why I've decided to give it my all here, too. Whatever he tries to do, I've gotta do even better! I'm cheering for you!: Hey, thanks! Let's snap a quick selfie together to commemorate my newest fan... You'll have to get a good time, then!: You've got that right. I can't just give this a halfhearted attempt. I've got to give it my all! Right! I suppose it's about time to get back to training. Next up... |
??? | Hey! Raihan! |
Raihan | Hm? I know that voice... |
- Duraludon's Rival

Raihan | Gloria! I knew it was you! And you've also got Piers with you? What brings you two here? |
Gloria | Same thing as you, Raihan! We're training for the time trials! |
Piers | I actually invited Marnie to train with me, but... |
Raihan | Why the long face? Something happen with Marnie? |
Piers | Oh, no. She just turned me down is all. |
(Flashback; at the glaciers)
Piers | It's all right. I'll just keep singin'. Singin' my humble songs... |
Gloria | Uhh...Piers? You OK? |
Piers | Oh... Hello, Gloria. Let me sing you a new song. I call it "Ballad of the Sad Older Brother." |
(Return to present) | |
Piers | As I sang my sad song, Gloria offered to come out and train with me. |
Raihan | Dramatic as ever, I see. But great timing! Why don't you two join us? |
Gloria | Really?! We'd love to! |
Piers | I'd rather not show my hand if I can help it, but I guess we've got no choice, huh. |
(The four begin to battle)
Gloria | Go get 'em, Zacian! |
Raihan | You've gotta be faster than that, Gloria! |
Gloria | Wha–?! |
Piers | Gloria! |
Raihan | You don't have time to be worrying about your teammate, Piers! |
(Raihan wins the battle)
Piers | Tch... Guess I wasn't able to defend in time. Sheesh. You beat me yet again. Duraludon was so fast!: Indeed. These two make it rather clear that you can't judge anyone by appearances. |
Raihan | That was even faster than our battle!: It looks like Duraludon may be getting pretty good at these time trial battles himself! |
Gloria | Duraludon's way lighter than it appears! It only weighs 88.2 pounds! |
Raihan | Nice one, Gloria! I can see you've really been studying your Pokédex! |
Gloria | Hehe! |
Piers | Let me teach you a little somethin' as well while we're at it. I hear that the Duraludon in Galar often fight with the Tyranitar that inhabit the same territory. Guess you could say they're rivals. It might be worthwhile to have your Duraludon battle a Tyranitar for a little experience. |
Raihan | Hey, that's not a bad idea. You might be onto something there, Piers. Do you know of any high-profile sync pairs on Pasio with a Tyranitar for a partner? I do!: Really? Great! |
Gloria | A sync pair with a Tyranitar...: Hmm... How about that one fellow who has rock-hard willpower? |
Piers | Sounds like you've got someone in mind. <player>, lead the way. |
Raihan | I can't wait for this battle! |
- Hear Me Roar!

(Volcano; Brock and Jasmine battle)
Brock | I guess Tyranitar is a better training partner for Steelix than Onix after all. It seems like Steelix is better at taking hits and counterattacking than trying to quickly dodge them. |
Jasmine | Yes! Even though Steelix evolves from Onix, the fighting styles that suit them are different. |
Brock | If we can train your Steelix to withstand Tyranitar's attacks, you'll be able to go toe-to-toe with any opponent! |
Raihan | Well said! That's the sort of measured, intelligent commentary I'd expect from one of Kanto's Gym Leaders. |
Brock | Uh... Who are you again? |
Raihan | The name's Raihan. I'm a Gym Leader from Galar who uses Dragon-type Pokémon. I've actually come to see if my Duraludon can spar with your Tyranitar to train for the time trials. <player> here has told me all about you. |
Brock | Ah, I see. Well then, let me formally introduce myself! I'm Brock, a Rock-type Gym Leader! Were you training with Jasmine?: Yeah, we're training for the time trials, too! I'll let my training partner here introduce herself. What about Jasmine?: Whoops! You're right. She needs to introduce herself, too! |
Jasmine | Hello. I'm a Gym Leader from Johto. My specialty Pokémon type is... Clang! The Steel type! |
Raihan | Whoa. What was that all about? Actually, could you do that again? I've gotta snap a selfie to remember that by! |
Jasmine | Wha–?! N-no! Absolutely not! |
Raihan | Camera shy, huh? Shame. |
Brock | All right, Raihan. Shall we get started? Tyranitar is unusually worked up right now. I haven't seen him like this in a while. |
Raihan | That's great! My own partner's been nagging me to hurry this along and let him battle since we got here! |
(Raihan sends out Duraludon)
Gloria | Wow! Both Pokémon are really eager to battle each other! |
Raihan | In Galar, these two Pokémon are rivals in the wild, Brock! Let's have them cut loose! |
Brock | My Tyranitar isn't from Galar, though. I guess it's just the nature of our Pokémon! Here we go, Tyranitar! |
- Someday, Somehow!

(Raihan and Brock begin to battle)
Brock | He's fast... Slow him down with rocks! |
Raihan | Bring the storm! My Duraludon will send you and your rocks flying! |
Brock | You're not getting away that easily! Bombard the area with rocks, Tyranitar! |
Raihan | That was close...but we dodged your rocks! |
Brock | What?! |
Raihan | Let's do it... The dragon roars! Time for our sync move! |
(Raihan and Duraludon unleash their sync move, defeating Brock's Tyranitar)
Brock | Well done! I can tell you've been training for speed! |
Raihan | That was a close one! We were getting rather desperate there towards the end! What a great battle! Let's snag a sweet selfie together to commemorate this, Brock! |
Brock | Sure thing! |
(Raihan takes a selfie with Brock)
Brock | Hey, I have an idea. Why don't you battle Jasmine next? |
Gloria | Jasmine is a Steel-type Pokémon expert! |
Piers | She may be able to teach you a thing or two about trainin' your Duraludon more effectively. |
Raihan | I was just thinking the same thing! How about it, Jasmine? |
Jasmine | S-sure! But first, I have something I'd like to ask of you... |
Raihan | What is it? |
Jasmine | P-please let me polish your Duraludon! |
Raihan | What? That's all? Of course you can! Give him a good shine! He's had a lot of battles today and got a little dirty. I'm sure he'd love a good polish. |
Jasmine | Thank you! Hold still, Duraludon. I'll get you polished up right away! |
(Training ensues) | |
Raihan | Hey, everybody! Let's take a selfie together to commemorate this training session! |
(Raihan snaps a selfie)
Raihan | All right! I got a good one! I hope this training pays off for you!: Me too! The great Raihan's gotta blast past Leon's record! Do you think you can beat Leon?: That's the plan! Now, all that's left to do is to take on the time trials for real. I'm coming for you, Leon! |
(In the city, after some time)
Gloria | Hey, <player>! Did you hear? Raihan beat Leon's record! When we all return to Galar, we may finally be entering the era of Champion Raihan! |
Raihan | Wh-what?! |
Gloria | Was that Raihan just now? |
(Gloria and the player catch up to Leon and Raihan)
Raihan | You've gotta be kidding! That's way too fast! It's unreal! |
Leon | Charizard and I got really fired up when we heard that you'd beaten our record! Thanks, though! That made the time trials even more fun! |
Gloria | Raihan, don't tell me... |
Raihan | Yeah, Leon went and beat my record. |
Gloria | Oh no... W-well, I hope you don't get too down about it– |
Raihan | Heh... Hahahaha! |
Gloria | Wh-what?! What happened, Raihan?! |
Raihan | This is great! Just great! It wouldn't be any fun if you let me beat you THAT easily! I'll just have to beat your record again! I'll do it as many times as it takes! Prepare yourself for a real challenge, Leon! |
Leon | I'm looking forward to it, Raihan! |
Gloria | We've got to work hard as well so we can catch up with those two! |
