The Thunder Badge (オレンジバッジ Orange Badge) is the badge awarded by the Vermilion Gym in Kanto. It is usually the third of the Kanto Badges a Trainer earns. In most media, it is given by Lt. Surge.
In the core series
Kanto-based games
In games set only in Kanto, the Thunder Badge cannot be acquired until after the Cascade Badge has been acquired, since Cut is required to access the Vermillion Gym. It is given by Lt. Surge, the leader of the Vermilion Gym, after defeating him.
Obtaining the Thunder Badge has several effects that can differ among games.
- RBY, FRLG: Cut (HM01) can be used outside of battle to cut away special plants.
- A stat for the player's Pokémon may be boosted by 12.5%. (Does not apply to Link Battles.)
- PE
- Increases the level of Pokémon that will obey the player. In the Let's Go games, this depends on the number of badges obtained, and the Thunder Badge can be obtained as anywhere from the third to seventh badge, resulting in a possible cap of lv. 40-80.
- Unlocks one or more items in the Poké Mart, depending on when it is obtained (since the Thunder Badge can be obtained as anywhere from the third to seventh badge).
Johto-based games
In Johto-based games, most of the Kanto badges can be acquired in any order after becoming Champion, including the Thunder Badge.
Obtaining the Thunder Badge has effects that can differ among games.
- GSC: the power of Electric-type moves is boosted by 12.5%. (Does not apply to Link Battles.)
In other games
In Pokémon Puzzle League, the player can earn badges, including the Thunder Badge by defeating Lt. Surge.
