Group rights on Bulbapedia are permissions that determine what different users can do on the site. Every user belongs to at least one group, which grants them specific abilities, from basic actions like editing pages to advanced tasks like blocking users or managing the site's appearance. While most editors won't need to think about these technical details during everyday editing, understanding group rights can help you know what you can do on Bulbapedia.

For the detailed and more technical list of exact permissions, see Special:ListGroupRights.

Basic user groups

Everyone

This group includes both logged-in users and those who aren't signed in.

  • Can read almost every page and view basic logs
  • May be able to create an account (if Bulbapedia settings allow)

Registered users (accounts)

When you create and confirm an account, you move from "All Users" to "Registered Users."

  • You can edit pages, start new pages, and interact with talk pages
  • You can mark edits as minor or send emails to other users
  • You can also customize your own user space (like your CSS/JS)

Auto-confirmed users

After your account has existed for a set number of days and made enough edits, Bulbapedia automatically upgrades you to "Autoconfirmed."

  • You can edit semi-protected pages (pages that block brand-new accounts)
  • You can create pages in certain namespaces
  • You skip some security measures, like CAPTCHAs

Managing your groups

Checking your groups

You can check your current groups in several ways:

Changing user groups

  • Only the Leadership Board has full authority to manage user rights and change an assigned group
  • All group changes are logged in the user rights log
  • In special cases, staff members with bureaucrat rights can add or remove specific groups.
    • Bureaucrat rights are technical permissions, not a staff position. They allow changing user group rights.

Group duration

  • Some group memberships may also be temporary
  • When viewing your groups, you can see if any have an expiration date
  • Once a temporary membership expires, you automatically leave that group
  • No special notification is sent when a group membership expires

Staff groups

Junior Administrators

The first level of staff membership, for those learning the ropes of wiki management:

  • Can handle basic vandalism cleanup with revision deletion and rollback tools
  • Have access to some page protection tools, including edit pages protected as "Allow only administrators"
  • Can assist with content moderation
  • Work under the guidance of full administrators

Administrators

Experienced staff members who maintain the wiki's daily operations:

  • Block and unblock users
  • Delete and undelete pages
  • Protect important pages
  • Handle content disputes
  • Have full anti-vandalism tools, including site-wide editing lock
  • Can check user IP addresses for investigating serious abuse
  • Can edit some interface messages

Leadership Board

The highest level of staff membership, overseeing all aspects of Bulbapedia:

  • Full administrative rights
  • Can modify site-wide settings and interface
  • Handle technical maintenance and security
  • Oversee staff appointments, including managing the user rights
  • Manage large-scale projects
  • Make policy decisions

Special groups

Bots

Automated or semi-automated accounts:

  • Perform repetitive tasks (e.g., updating templates)
  • Keep recent changes clean by hiding bulk "bot edits"
