Pokémon Yellow Version

Pokémon Special Pikachu Edition (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ピカチュウ Pocket Monsters Pikachu), or more commonly, Pokémon Yellow, is a sister game to Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Green. Inspired by the Pokémon anime, the Yellow version of the Gameboy Pokémon series stars Pikachu and adds new Team Rocket battles featuring Jessie and James and their Meowth, Koffing, and Ekans.

The English version of Pokémon Yellow is the first Pokémon game designed to take advantage of the Gameboy Color.

Differences from Pokémon Red and Blue

• Pikachu is the player's starting Pokémon and travels with the player onscreen; the rival begins with an Eevee.
• Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle may be obtained later in the game.
• Jessie and James appear at various points throughout the game.
• Some Gym Leaders have changed their battle team and strategies.
• Cerulean Cave has a new layout.
• Pokémon have all new graphics, closely resembling Ken Sugimori's Pokémon illustrations and clip art seen in the strategy guides and trading card games.
• The English version (and other non-Japanese releases) take advantage of the Game Boy Color.
• The Game Boy Printer may be used to print out Pokémon from the Pokédex.
• A Surfing Pikachu mini-game is included.
• Two linked Yellow versions may battle in the following battle modes: Pika Cup, Poké Cup, and Petite Cup.
• One of the Pokémon who must be evolved by trading (Machoke) is obtainable in a trade, making you be able to get its evolution without linking to other players.
• The Pikachu that the player started with won't evolve unless traded to a different game.
• A Colosseum 2 battle mode was added, allowing players to participate in the Pika Cup (Lv 15 to Lv 20 Pokémon only. Their combined Level limit is 50), Petit Cup (between Lv 25 to Lv 30, and all Pokémon must be under 6'8", and weigh less than 44 pounds) and Poké Cup (Only Pokémon from Lv 50 to Lv 55 can enter, and the sum of all Pokémon levels cannot exceed 155. Mew is not allowed).

The following Pokémon do not appear in Yellow version, and must be traded from another version:

The following Pokémon evolve from Pokémon who do appear in Yellow, but to evolve them you must trade them into/out of the game:

• Alakazam
• Golem
• Gengar
