May and Bulbasaur

May's Bulbasaur (Japanese: ハルカのフシギダネ Haruka's Fushigidane) was the fourth Pokémon caught by May during her travels through Hoenn. It was captured along the way to Fortree City in a place known as the Forbidden Forest. It is voiced by 伊東みやこ Miyako Itō in the Japanese version and by Tar Sands and Michelle Knotz in future cameo appearences.

Bulbasaur was captured in Grass Hysteria, although it had been featured in the series opening, Challenger!!, for a short while before that. May was kidnapped by a hungry Skarmory and ended up lost in a place called the Forbidden Forest, a preserve for Grass-type Pokémon. There, she met a clumsy Bulbasaur trying to pick flowers. Bulbasaur warmed up to May after she saved the little Grass-type from a fall. The other Grass-type Pokémon acted very hostile, though, and repeatedly tried to attack May. However, Bulbasaur explained to Venusaur, the ruler of the Forbidden Forest, that May was a friend. Before May had to leave, Bulbasaur decided to stay with her.

May's Bulbasaur is distinctive from Ash's Bulbasaur in two ways. One, that it has a gentler personality and a pair of heart-shaped spots on its forehead. It is fond of flowers, and once was almost carried away when it jumped into the back of a moving flower truck. It's second main distinction from Ash's is its use of the move Petal Dance when opposed to Ash's Bulbasaur's use of the technique Solarbeam.

It is in love with Ash's Bulbasaur and the feeling apears to be mutual. As a result, it now stays with Professor Oak.

Trivia

May capturing her Bulbasaur in a preserved location for Grass-type Pokémon may be a reference to Ash's Bulbasaur who was captured in the Hidden Village in Kanto which was a place for Grass Pokémon.
