Easter egg: Difference between revisions

Easter eggs are hidden parts of a game or software that are usually discovered by more experienced players. There have been a number of Easter eggs throughout the Pokémon franchise. In the games, there are several items, locations and events that are considered by some to be Easter eggs.

Easter Eggs in the games

Truck Rumor

The truck, as it appears in FireRed and LeafGreen.

A major Easter egg in the game is the truck from the first generation games. In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, as well as their remakes Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, there is a truck which appears in the S.S. Anne's port which serves no evident purpose except as scenery. With scenery being very sparse in the Generation I games, and this being one of the few sprites with no other purpose than to exist in one spot, fans began speculating that another purpose existed for this truck, and that it could perhaps be moved with Strength. Thus, a popular rumor sprang up that a Poké Ball containing Mew could be found underneath. The only flaw with this was that the HM for Strength could only be obtained after getting Cut, which required the S.S. Anne leaving. Players found ways around this by trading Pokémon knowing Cut to other games which did not have the HM. The rumor was proven false.

Later, in the Generation III remakes of Red and Blue, the truck is still present, however, there is actually something of a point to get to it this time around. On its pier, if the player walks down a bit, they can find a hidden Lava Cookie, unavailable until later in the game. The truck had been positioned there, as an easter egg, due to the old, popular rumor that were spreading during the time of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow.

Diamond dust snow

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, on January 12th (Junichi Masuda Director of GameFreaks Birthday) Snowpoint City has sparkling diamond snow instead of the normal snow that floats down. On January 10, 2008, Junichi Masuda posted a blog entry urging players to play their Diamond or Pearl January 12. On that day, the same day as Masuda's birthday, a weather effect called diamond dust occurred in Snowpoint City, replacing the usual snow. It resembles glitter in the air. It is purely aesthetic, since it only occurs within the city where no battles are possible. It has been determined that other special weather conditions such as thunderstorms happen on predetermined days throughout the year, such as:

• April 22, when in 2007 Diamond and Pearl saw their release in North America.
• February 29 the extra day of the leap year
• March 16, St. Patrick's Day
• May 1
• September 2
• September 20
• October 30

Secret Wallpaper

Another Easter egg in the game is the secret wallpaper for the Pokémon storage system that can only be obtain by outside resources. Only a special phrase, unique to the player's ID number can be used to unlock the wallpaper from Pokémon Emerald and Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. This phrase can be obtained by guessing, or using a generator like the one located at Filb.de. In Pokémon Emerald, certain, unique phrases will result in Walda in Rustboro giving the player a special, customizable wallpaper design by cheering her up and making her laugh. Using the Secret Word Generator the player is able to obtain the phrase:

1. Input the Trainer ID number of the Pokémon Emerald game. (e.g. 04259)
2. Select the language of the game.
3. Using the links, select foreground colors, patterns, and icons, or just press the button to generate a random wallpaper.
4. Click on "Generate secret word" or "random wallpaper".
5. A special page will come up, displaying the Secret Word code (ex.WWBBCLpnJPcMVFG). Copy it down or commit it to memory, and follow the site instructions.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, eight special wallpapers can be unlocked, also through using special, unique phrases by a man in Jubilife TV located in Jubilife City. Online generators have been created to supply players with these phrases, using player's ID numbers and game language. After selecting a language and entering an ID number, clicking "Generate" will take viewers to a page full of wallpaper, with four words next to each one. Talking to the TV Producer in Jubilife TV and entering those four words in the order they are presented in will unlock a wallpaper, with 8 unlockable in all. Unlike in Emerald, Diamond and Pearl can hold all eight wallpapers at once.

Other Easter eggs

• In Pokémon Stadium, when the player uploads a Pikachu from Yellow, it will be voiced by Ikue Ohtani and have unique sound effects. Likewise, if a Pikachu or Raichu that knows Surf is used, it will have a unique attack animation. This animation also occurs in Pokémon Battle Revolution.

• If the player speaks to either Dawn or Lucas (depending on their gender) on which it is their birthday on the Nintendo DS calendar, they will wish the player happy birthday. This only happens after the player has beaten the Elite Four.

• An easter egg can be found in Super Smash Bros. Brawl while the player is playing in Pokémon Stadium 2 stage when the stage is in Ice Mode. If the player angles the camera and looks through the window of the cabin that Snorunt is in, a poster of Masahiro Sakurai's pet cat can be seen on the wall. Sakurai is the creator of the Super Smash Bros. series as well as the creator of the Kirby franchise.
