Synopsis

We begin in the Stadium with Ash's next battle about to start. Ash summons Grovyle and Glalie while his opponent calls out Quilava and Charizard. May realizes that Ash might be in trouble; both of his Pokémon are weak against Fire-types.

Grovyle uses Pound on Quilava while Glalie uses Icy Wind to slow down the opponents. Before long, Quilava is knocked out. But Charizard quickly counters with a Heat Wave that takes out Grovyle.

Ash orders Glalie to use Ice Beam on the ground, forming a number of icy pillars to use as defenses against Fire attacks. Charizard sends Glalie flying into the pillars with a Steel Wing, but rather than injuring Glalie it ends up bouncing around in a manner much like pinball machines. Glalie uses this to build up momentum for a Headbutt and Charizard is knocked out, giving Ash the victory.

Morrison then meets up with Ash, and both are excited to have won another battle. They leave to see how Tyson is doing.

Tyson and his opponent are each down to their last Pokémon. Tyson's using a Sceptile against an Aggron. Sceptile uses Detect to evade a barrage of Metal Claw attacks, then charges up a SolarBeam to send Aggron out of the fight, meaning that Tyson has also won his battle.

Ash and his friends have now advanced to the third round of the League. From now on, all their matches will be 6-on-6 fights. Ash will be the first one to compete in such a match the next morning.

The episode cuts to Ash getting ready to face his newest opponent, a girl named Katie. Katie sends out a Venomoth while Ash counters with Torkoal. Torkoal blocks a Stun Spore with its Iron Defense, then launches a Flamethrower. Katie, panicked, calls back Venomoth and calls out Golduck. Ash orders Torkoal to use Body Slam, but Golduck knocks Torkoal off its feet with Hydro Pump and then cuts it down with Fury Swipes.

Ash sends Pikachu into the arena, so Katie recalls Golduck and sends out Dugtrio. Pikachu uses a Quick Attack and Iron Tail, but Dugtrio manages to counter with Sand Tomb, knocking Pikachu out.

Ash quickly jumps out onto the field to pick up Pikachu. He then sends out Glalie, ordering an Ice Beam. Dugtrio is quickly defeated, and Katie sends out Misdreavus. Glalie uses a Headbutt but Misdreavus counters with Destiny Bond. Misdreavus faints, but then suddenly Glalie glows purple and collapses as well.

The battle is at a stalemate and the episode ends on a cliffhanger.
