Release information

This card was released as a promotional card. In Japan, it was released as a special card by All Nippon Airlines throughout August and September in 1999 with artwork by Toshinao Aoki. Passengers flying in conjunction with the "Pokémon Getaways" campaign could redeem their boarding passes for the 2 card set including Moltres and Zapdos. The English version was given away in the first few weeks of the theatrical release of Pokémon The Movie 2000 with then English-exclusive artwork by Naoyo Kimura.
The card was reprinted in Japan with the English artwork in Pokémon Web. The original Japanese artwork was eventually featured on English cards when reprinted in Supreme Victors as a retro card.

Trivia

  • The initial print of the Wizards promo erroneously credited Toshinao Aoki as the illustrator, who illustrated the Japanese promo. Wizards rectified the error, with subsequent prints correctly crediting Naoyo Kimura as the illustrator. However, the change was brought about close to or after the release of the film, so it is likely to assume fewer people received the correct version later into the campaign compared to those who recieved the misprint earlier.

Origin

This card's Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Yellow, though it is slightly reworded.
