{{../Edit}} In all core series Pokémon games since Gold and Silver, players can register (Japanese: とうろく register) and deselect (Japanese: かいじょ deselect) certain functionality and/or key items to/from the hardware buttons SELECT or Y for use in the overworld without navigating to the menu and selecting the appropriate category.

Registrable features

Differences between generations

Generations II–III

One key item can be registered to the SELECT button.

Generation IV

Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum

One key item can be registered to the Y button.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Up to two key items can be registered at a time. The first item registered can be accessed through the Y button, while both can be accessed on the outer area of the menu, which is always open on the touchscreen.

Generation V

The Generation V games have a Ready button (Japanese: 便利ボタン handy button) that allows access to registered functions and items. It is managed by adding or removing check marks to the boxes at the bottom of the Pokémon List, Pokédex, Bag, Trainer Card, or Options. Registrable key items also have a check box next to the item in the Bag. It is accessed using the Y button.

If only one element is registered, it acts the same as in previous generations and does not bring up the Ready button interface. The button's list is limited to 34 entries which can be rearranged by pressing SELECT.

Generation VI

Up to four key items can be registered to the Y button. If more than one item is registered, the D-Pad is used to choose one of the items.
