A key item is an important item that the player needs either to enter certain minigames such as Pokémon contests, take actions like fishing or continue the storyline. There are commonly only one of each of these items in the game, and they cannot be bought or sold, although you may trade one for another, such as the trade between the Mach and Acro Bike in [Ruby Pokémon Ruby], [Sapphire] and [Emerald]. Since Generation II, they have been in a separate pocket of the bag from all other items.
