Pocket Monsters is a shōnen Pokémon manga based on the Pokémon games by Kousaku Anakubo. It is also the first true Pokémon manga. It stars a Pokémon trainer named Isamu Akai (nicknamed "Red") and his rude Clefairy.
It is chiefly a gag manga, using crude humor and slapstick. It has two sequels: Pocket Monsters RS, which takes place in Hoenn, and Pocket Monsters DP, which takes place in Sinnoh.
It is translated by Chuang Yi in Singapore under the title Pokémon Pocket Monsters, but it is unpopular among western fans as the art style is so different; many of the Pokémon and characters are unrecognizable. Chuang Yi announced a planned North American release in the late 1990s, however, this never happened, probably due to the series' dramatically different art style.
Red, his Clefairy, and his Pikachu make a cameo appearance in the anime episode Lights, Camerupt, Action.
Controversy
In the manga, Isamu Akai and his Clefairy appear nude in the end of the second chapter. Their genetalia is visible. This is a possible reason why the manga wasn't released in English speaking countries.
