This type only exists due to a programming oversight. It is thought that ''Bird'' was a [[Pokémon Red and Green beta|beta]] name for the {{type2|Flying}}, as this was allegedly seen in beta versions of the [[Generation I]] games.

The Bird-type remained in the games' coding during [[Generation II]], likely because the coding for Gold and Silver was based directly on that of Red and Green.

The Bird-type is one of the three types given exclusively to several Glitch Pokémon. Currently, MissingNo. and 'M are the only known Glitch Pokémon to have the type Bird.
