In the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal, the player could link up with others through the use of a mobile phone. The Goldenrod City Pokémon Center was replaced by a larger building which included the machine to use this feature, and a News machine.

The Pokémon Mobile System (モバイルスタジアム) also featured a way for the player to recivce the GS Ball. After taking the GS Ball to Kurt which is Azalea Town to examine, the player would place the GS Ball in the Ilex Forest shrine, near the entrance to the forest. This would cause a level 30 Celebi to fly down and attack the player.

The Battle Tower near Olivine City in the Japanese verison also uses the Pokémon Mobile System.
