Gary's Blastoise (Japanese: シゲルのカメックス Shigeru's Kamex) was the first Pokémon obtained by Gary on his journey as a Pokémon Trainer. His Japanese voice actor is Unshō Ishizuka and his English voice actor is Eric Stuart.

In Pokémon, I Choose You!, Gary bragged to Ash that he had chosen the best Pokémon out of the three starters. Although Ash asked, Gary refused to reveal who the Pokémon was. Fans often implied that Gary's starter was Eevee, as Gary's in-game counterpart, Blue, starts with an Eevee in Pokémon Yellow. Gary's real starter Pokémon was finally revealed in The Ties That Bind, during Gary's battle with Ash in the Johto League, that his starter Pokémon was a Squirtle, which had now fully evolved into a Blastoise.

Blastoise is Gary's strongest Pokémon. It took out Ash's Heracross and Bayleef, and it nearly defeated his Muk. It also put up a good fight against his Charizard, but in the end, Ash defeated his rival. Blastoise was also the only Pokémon Gary took with him when he left to pursue his dream of being a Pokémon researcher.

It is implied that Brock already knew the identity of Gary's starter. As Gary has a Boulderbadge, it would make sense that Gary used Squirtle in their Gym Battle.

Gary and Blastoise later appeared in DP045 as they helped Ash, Brock and Dawn protect the Shieldon from the notorious Pokémon Hunter J and her evil minions.
