Chuck appears in Machoke, Machoke Man.

Just after Ash and co left to pick up medicine for Jasmine in Olivine City, they met a man rough housing with a Machoke. After following him, Ash discovered that the man was Chuck, Gym Leader of the Cianwood City Gym. Even though he is the Fighting master, he gets tired easily as he is a little fat. His wife continually makes fun of him because of this. His battle technique is to battle with his Pokémon to improve their concentration.

Later Chuck and Ash had their battle for a Storm Badge. Ash used Pikachu who got defeated by Chuck's Poliwrath, so Ash had Bayleef defeat Poliwrath and Machoke.

It was later revealed that Brawly used to be one of the many students of Chuck.

He is voiced by 角田信朗 Nobuaki Kakuda in the original. His English voice actor is Dan Green, who voices the character Knuckles in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

He enjoys a good battle, but after losing Chuck vows to train 24 hours a day. After he is defeated, his wife will give the player HM02 (Fly). She also comments that she is grateful that her husband would be doing more training, since he was getting "a little flabby". Also, Chuck is known to spar with his fighting Pokémon.

Trainers in his gym: Black Belt Yoshi, Black Belt Lao, Black Belt Nob, Black Belt Lung.

In addition to the Storm Badge, Chuck gives out TM01 (DynamicPunch).

"Wha? Huh? I lost? How about that! You're worthy of Storm Badge!"
