A key item is an important item that the player needs either to enter certain minigames such as Pokémon contests, take actions like fishing or continue the storyline. There are commonly only one of each of these items in the game, and they cannot be bought or sold, although one may be traded for another, or used to get another item, such as the Mach Bike and Acro Bike in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. Since Generation II, they have been in a separate pocket of the bag from all other items.
