Revision as of 12:20, 23 November 2010
Welcome to my page on BW name predictions for characters and places. But, I have no plans on predicting Pokémon names, they're usually unpredictable. This is essentially just a rip-off of Kenji-girl's and Maxim's idea. But to be more original, I decided to predict place names, and (again) Chinese names*. For other languages, try Siegfried's page. I have no plans of predicting most of the CotD's names. For the convenience of those who can't read, (most of the) Chinese names will be provided with pinyin which are conveniently located in the tt template.
Please DO NOT edit this page. I will update it whenever. The names may be subjected to change without prior notice.
English
Characters
Game Protagonists and Supporting Characters
Japanese | Name Prediction | Reason | Actual | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Touko and Touya | Claire and Clark | From "clear". I would have liked "Blake" and "Bianca" anyway. | ||
Cheren and Bel | Cheren and Bel | The names sounds normal enough in English. | ||
Professor Araragi | Professor Linden | Oak, Elm, Birch, Rowan... Go figure. Besides, "Yew" sounds weird. | ||
Makomo | Alice | The titular character of "Alice in Wonderland". | ||
Dent | Phyll/Virgil | From phullon (Greek word for leaf) and virere (Latin word for green). | ||
Pod | Pierre/Pyril | Similar to puros, Greek word for fire. | ||
Corn | Ponce/Aquil | From "pond"* and aqua (Latin word for water). | ||
Aloe | Vera/Nora/Regine | From Aloe vera and "average", "normal", "regular". | ||
Arti | Arthur | From "art" and "arthropod". | ||
Kamitsure | Amber* | The etymology of "electron" and "electricity" was derived from the Greek word for amber. Also a reference to its properties when they are rubbed together. |
||
Yacon | Terrence | From "terra" (earth). | ||
Fuuro | Ariel/Angel | First one is from "aerial", not referring to a certain redheaded mermaid. Second one is obvious. | ||
Hachiku | Setsu | I really have no idea, so I just took the onyomi reading for 雪 (snow). | ||
Iris | Iris*/Dora | From the Engrish doragon. Also she does resemble a certain tanned adventure-loving girl. | ||
Shaga | Drago | Obviously from "dragon"*. | ||
Shikimi | Velma | From "violet" and alma, Spanish word for soul. Also Velma Dinkley. | ||
Giima | Devlin/Vlad | Do I need to explain? | ||
Renbu | Manny | From the Spanish phrase "mano a mano" (hand to hand). Also from this famous boxer. | ||
Adeku | Rhodes/Rhodey | Similar to "red". Also from Rhopalocera. Yeah, it's lame. |
Team Plasma
Japanese | Name Prediction | Reason | Actual | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Team Plasma | Team Plasma | We all know it's going to be this anyway... | ||
N (Harmonia) | N | Remember J and O... | ||
Geechisu and the 6 other sages | Goetis, Vio, Ryokushi, Giallo, Rot, Sumura and Asura | Goetis is from goetia, Greek word for sorcery*. For others, the colors of rainbow in other languages. We have Vio (violet), Asura (azul, Spanish for blue), Ryokushi (緑色 ryokushoku, green color) and Lot (rot, German for red), Jaro (giallo, Italian for yellow), and maybe Sumura (أسمر ’smr, Arabic for brown). No idea for indigo (maybe Goetis). |

Don George | Don Jorge | Same as Japanese name. Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny anyone? |

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Isshu | Isshu | I think the spelling will be kept. It doesn't have the long "o" sound. | Unova | O.O Wow, that was totally unexpected. It will take me a while to get used to this. | |
Kanoko Town | Fawnapple Town |
From "fawn" and "dapple". The "apple" was unintentional. | |||
Karakusa Town | Prosperivy Town | From its Japanese motto "Thick ivy is proof of prosperity". | |||
Sanyou City | Tristelle City | From "Tri" (three) and "stellar". | |||
Shippou City | Cloissure City | Portmanteau of "Cloisonné" and "treasure". | |||
Hiun City | Aeraltia City | From "aerial" and "altitude". I'm not too fond of this name. Skyline City would better name for it. | |||
Raimon City | Thorgate City | From "Thor", the Norse god of thunder, and "gate". | |||
Hodomoe City | Nautwirl City | From "nautical" and "whirl". | |||
Fukiyose City | Windrift City | From "wind" and "drift". | |||
Sekka City | Snowdrop City | From "snow" and "drop". Also refers to the flower "snowdrop" (a.k.a. Galanthus). | |||
Souryuu City | Twindra City | From "twin" and "dragon". Has nothing to do with "tundra". | |||
Kagome Town | Baskeye Town | From "basket" and "eye". | |||
Sazanami Town | Rippliary Town | From "ripple" and "capilliary". | |||
Kanawa Town | Ferrona Town | From ferrum (iron) and "corona". | |||
Black City | Carbonjet City | From "carbon" and "jet". |

---|---|---|---|---|
Current Town | Current Town/Currant Town | First one is the same as Japanese name. For a plant theme, it's most likely currant. |
Chinese
Characters
Game Protagonists and Supporting Characters
Japanese | Name Prediction | Reason | Actual | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Touko and Touya | 透子 and 透也 | From their Japanese name. If there will be official names* for them, they're probably these. | ||
Cheren and Bel | 伽連/車玄 and 貝兒/白露 | 車玄 and 白露 are weird transliterations for their names. It's most likely 伽連, and 貝兒 anyway. | ||
Professor Araragi | 紫杉博士 | Translation of her Japanese name. | ||
Makomo | 真菰 | From 真菰 makomo. | ||
Dent | 田斗 | From the name 田斗 dento. 田 means field, while 斗 is a measure for dry grain * | ||
Pod | 炮豆 | Another weird transliteration. It can mean "quick-fried/baked/cannon beans". Also from 豆莢, "pod". | ||
Corn | 穀潤 | Transliteration of corn. It's a combination of 穀 (grain) and 潤 (moist). | ||
Aloe | 阿蘆薈 | 阿蘆薈 is both a transliteration and translation (蘆薈 means "aloe".). | ||
Arti | 雅技 | I got the idea from the Cantonese 雅枝竹 (artichoke). 雅技 means "elegant skill". | ||
Kamitsure | 甘蜜雷/嘉蜜雷 | Sort of a mixture of translation and transliteration. Portmanteau of 甘菊/嘉, 蜜*, and 雷 | ||
Yacon | 壓坤 | Transliteration of his name. Also 壓 means to press. 坤 is a trigram representing "earth". | ||
Fuuro | 風露 | This one was too obvious. From her Japanese name, literally means "wind dew" in Chinese. | ||
Hachiku | 淡竹 | From 淡竹 hachiku. Literally "light-colored bamboo". | ||
Iris | 愛麗絲 | Transliteration of iris. Literally "love beautiful silk". Has other variations (愛莉絲、艾麗絲、艾莉絲). | ||
Shaga | 射干 | From 射干 shaga. It's also a name of a flower, though not the same as Iris japonica. | ||
Shikimi | 莽樒/阿樒* | From 樒 shikimi and 莽草 (Illicium lanceolatum). Apparently 樒 refers to branches hang on Buddhist graves. | ||
Giima | 越桔 | Generally refers to the Vaccinium genus. He also does resemble Koga (阿桔). Transliterating his name would sound awkward. |
||
Caitlin | 嘉德麗雅 | Transliteration and translation of Cattleya. Literally "Excellent virtue, beautiful and elegant" | ||
Renbu | 蓮霧/練武 | Both from renbu. First one is a plant's name. The second one means "to train martial art". | ||
Adeku | 赤楠 | Translation of his Japanese name. 赤 also means red. |
Team Plasma
Japanese | Name Prediction | Reason | Actual | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|
Team Plasma | 電漿隊 | 電漿 is Mandarin for "plasma". The other word 等離子 is not very poetic*. | ||
N (Harmonia) | N (和爾蒙尼亞) | Again J and O... | ||
Geechisu and the 6 other sages | 竊帝蘇, 蔚歐, 綠士, 恰洛, 羅特, 壽暮拉, 阿祖拉 | All of them are transliterations, some of which have some added reference. 竊 means to usurp *. 綠士 is from ryokushi and contains 綠 (green). 洛 is a reference to Yellow (小洛). 暮 of 壽暮拉 means sunset. 阿祖拉 is named after this character. |

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Isshu | 壹種 | From 壱種isshu (one variety). The name sounds strange, but I'd prefer it over transliteration such as 伊修 and 伊樹. | |||
Kanoko Town | 鹿子鎮 | There was 真新鎮 (真っ新), 若葉鎮 (若葉), 未白鎮 (未白), and 雙葉鎮 (双葉). 鹿子鎮 (鹿の子) is definitely next. | |||
Karakusa Town | 唐草鎮 | From 唐草 karakusa. Literally "Tang grass". | |||
Sanyou City | 三曜市 | Took a while to figure this one out. There were a lot of choices (三葉、三陽、三洋、三樣). I eventually settled with 三曜. | |||
Shippou City | 七寶市 | From 七宝 shippou (Seven treasures). There's a similarly named town in Shanghai , not that it matters... | |||
Hiun City | 飛雲市 | From 飛雲 hiun, (flying cloud). Too obvious... | |||
Raimon City | 雷紋市/雷文市/雷門市 | All of them from raimon. First two* means "thunder pattern". The third one means "thunder gate". | |||
Hodomoe City | 帆巴市/帆漩市/帆渦市 | First one is from "帆巴" hodomoe*. Last two means "sail whirlpool". | |||
Fukiyose City | 吹寄市/風聚市 | First one is from 吹き寄せ fukiyose*. The second translates to "winds gather"*. | |||
Sekka City | 雪華市 | From 雪華 sekka. It can be translated as "magnificent snow" or "snow blossom". | |||

Kagome Town | 籠目鎮 | From 篭目 kagome. Can either mean "basket eye" or "cage eye". | |||
Sazanami Town | 細波鎮 | From 細波 sazanami. Literally "fine wave". | |||
Kanawa Town | 金輪鎮/鐵輪鎮 | From 金輪/鐵輪 kanawa. 金輪 can either mean "metal wheel". 鐵輪* means "steel wheel". | |||
Black City | 黑色市 | Literally "black-colored city". |
