I'd like to back up this statement--Zhen, is this an error from the MediaWiki files or something that was made accidentally? evkl 16:28, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
If you look at the Pages that link to this, you'll see that it is used as a placeholder for text for moved and deleted pages. - MTC 19:03, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Doesn't this add to the article count? And what about all the other dollars used in The Mediawiki Messages ($2 to $8). --ASCII 07:55, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
- See the difference between what links to $1 and what links to $2. That's why. I dunno why it's different. It just is. Probably because we've got MediaWiki pages that link to something when used on pages, where that something is the first parameter entered, and nothing does it for the second parameter. Idea for hiding without adding to article count
I'm simply pitching this idea as the page does indeed say "If there is another way to hide this page, feel free to do so!"
Another possible way to avoid this showing up on WantedPages while not actually having an article called "$1" would be to, in anything in the MediaWiki namespace, surround any links to "$1" with includeonly tags (<includeonly>[[:$1]]</includeonly>), so the links won't actually show up, and when the files are used, they will still be replaced with whatever would go in place of "$1".
Don't hold me to this; it's just a guess. I'm not entirely sure it would work. Schiffy (Speak to me|What I've done) 00:03, 12 August 2013 (UTC)
