A counterattack is a move which is triggered by receiving damage from an opposing Pokémon, dealing damage to that Pokémon in response. If a Pokémon attempts to use a counterattack and is not struck by an eligible attack while preparing to execute it, the counterattack will fail; most counterattacks have decreased priority to compensate. The damage dealt by a counterattack is directly dependent on the damage the user received.
