Bulbapedia talk:Manual of style/Anime/Archive 1

Gold Silver Ethan Time Capsule.png This is a talk page archive.

It contains old discussions of topics relating to the article. Please do not add or remove any content from it.

OK, now here's the longer version of that history section, just to give you some background: after these articles were discussed to death on their talk pages without conclusion, PAK Man brought the subject up on the forums in August 2008. After several users, including Maverick Nate, Fabu-Vinny, Sketch, myself, and others threw in their input, I wrote down the first draft of these rules. PAK made his improvements, but by September the subject seemed to die down without anything done.

MAGNEDETH then created a poll of sorts on a subpage of his, but there seemed to be no pattern. Thus, when I returned from my hiatus last week, I brought up the old rules again, and in a Bulbapedia meeting that took place on May 10, 2009, we agreed on a new version of the rules and the following morning I proposed this policy. That's it. --electAbuzzzz 11:07, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

...It's the level-headed users like yourself that make Bulbapedia better. I'm going to go recast my votes based on these rules. --Alpha TotodileRWAR!! 12:04, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
So, according to these proposed requirements, articles like Hippopotas,Spoink, and Wynaut don't make the cut? It also calls into question articles like Sabrina's Kadabra, Koga's Venomoth, Lorelei's_Cloyster Bugsy's Scyther, Chuck's Machoke, Roxanne's Nosepass, Winona's Swellow, Wallace's Milotic, Crasher Wake's Floatzel, Noland's Articuno, Greta's Medicham. I would suggest reworking the requirements for Gym Leader/Elite Four/Frontier Brains to include something like, if the Pokémon is the leader's signature Pokémon, has a counter-part in the games and or TCG, and played a significant role in the battle. Since GL/E4/FB's signature Pokémon are rarely anime exclusive characters. Trainer-c 13:23, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Hippopotas, Spoink and Wynaut will be merged to one article, according to the rule. And some of the gym leader articles you mentioned are not only called into question, they're just downright not notable according to this - which is exactly the point. Do you really think we need Koga's Venomoth?
That specific rule was talked about more than any other, both on the forums and on the AIM meeting, and the important part of it, as most of the people there saw it, was the out of battle thing. If it did nothing but battle, it's not notable. It had no impact. As for the other medias - well, if they were in the games or TCG it doesn't matter much - because it has no role in the games and already has its own article in the TCG. I could see the significance if it's a major manga role, but in most cases the manga role isn't that big either. --electAbuzzzz 14:16, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
I gotta say, I think you and I have the exact same mindset sometimes. I agree completely with all of these guidelines, and feel that this notability policy is just what Bulbapedia needs. On a side note, when did we get an article about Koga's Venomoth? Have I really been absent that long? --PAK Man Talk 11:43, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
Sadly, quite long. It was recreated many times until someone recreated it near the end of March, and they got tired of deleting it over and over again. Kevzo8 11:47, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Number 7

What defines "notable if it's a CotD from an episode"? that Riolu from the Ranger special falls into this category yet when someone tried to make an article for it, it was deleted. -Sketch 13:49, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, Riolu's even like more notable than Puka, it's in two episodes and it has a story about it too. tc²₆tc26 01:00, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Voting

OK, since I'm failing at creating an AIM voting on this, we'll do this the old-fashioned way. EB members, please place your vote - Agree to pass the policy, Disagree to change it (in which case, please state what exactly bothers you). That way we can determine whether we have a majority or not.

At six thumbs-up, that's a majority vote there; I'll give it a few hours to simmer and fill out the taste, then serve it up as an official policy. (if nobody else steals the thunder.) -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 19:48, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Drew's Absol

"For rival characters and other recurring characters, only their signature Pokémon may have an article created about them. An exception may be made if another Pokémon that is not the signature has had an impact on the series. One example of this would possibly be Gary's Arcanine. Jimmy and Marina also fall into this category."

So you're telling me that Drew's Absol doesn't meet this criteria but Drew's Masquerain does? Absol was the main focus of Drew's Pokémon during the Kanto Grand Festival. He used it during the appeal round, there was an instance that he doubted its power and Ash had to talk to him about it, and he used Absol in the semifinals against May. How is that not notable? I believe that an error was made when this article was removed. There are plenty of rival Pokémon with even less notablility. Drew's Masquerain, Harley's Ariados, Zoey's Shellos, and Paul's Gliscor. I'm failing to see why Absol was looked at above these. Please rethink your decision on this. --ケンジガール 00:20, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Not to mention multiple cases of Pokémon [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/w/index.php?title=Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Questionable_notability&hidelinks=1 actually tagged with the questionable notability notice template. Drew's Absol absolutely should not have been snap-judged before the notice-tagged Pokémon were looked over--the notice-tagged Pokémon should have had priority over Drew's Absol. --Shiningpikablu252 02:25, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Oy people, for the love of Arceus, calm down. First of all, just because Absol was the first goner doesn't mean we're not getting rid of the others you mentioned. I just didn't have time to do it yet, I had to go to work after Absol. Now as for the decision regarding Absol - KG, you went on and on describing Absol's role in the episodes he was in, but... all you did was prove my point. Drew battled with it, and then after that Drew battled with it some more. Oh wow. Yes, there was some story with Drew and Ash that had to do with Absol, but Absol itself did absolutely nothing but battle (pardon my pun). I discussed it with others first. --electAbuzzzz 06:30, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Then I'll happily do it for you, right now. --ケンジガール 08:32, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Also, I don't believe any of the examples that you gave in your exceptions fit your criteria. Arcanine did nothing and Jimmy and Marina's Pokémon did nothing. I'm not sure how they impact the series whatsoever. --ケンジガール 08:36, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
OK, everything is open to debate. This policy, like every policy, will evolve and change over time. The EB went over it and agreed on the current version, but if you disagree with something then it can be discussed. Go on AIM sometime and we'll talk it through. Jimmy and Marina aren't listed as exception though, they're just listed as falling into the rivals category to prevent confusion. --electAbuzzzz 12:25, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

James's Gyarados

Can someone change this since Gyarados is no longer considered notable enough?--Burgundy 01:18, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Update

Am I or anyone else think these rules should be revised / updated since many several Pokémon that fall into these categories are no longer considered notable for their pages?--Hikaru Wazana 23:35- 25 December 2011

Like who? Toon Ganondorf (t c) 00:22, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
I prefer not to cite examples, because Kenji-Girl asked me to avoid this kind of action but the rule about Gym Leader's and Jesse and James,I guess that they deserved be revised in some way.--Hikaru Wazana 21:35- 26 December 2011
If you think there should be a revision to the rules because of certain Pokemon, you'll have to give examples so that we understand where you are coming from. Toon Ganondorf (t c) 00:33, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Okey ...

Well, that the following pages can not be done differently?? For the record, I am giving two examples, just because you asked.

Jessie's Woobat

Could be so.

Jessie's Woobat
Woobat
In Enter Iris and Axew!, while in a cave planning their move, the Team Rocket trio saw a group of Woobat. Jessie captured one off-screen, as was revealed when Jessie called it out to battle Ash's newly captured Pidove. It was able to defeat the Tiny Pigeon Pokémon with a single Air Slash as it was already weakened during her battle with Ash's Pikachu. It was then defeated by Oshawott's Water Gun after it had worn Pikachu and Axew out.

From then onwards, Woobat was called out almost every time Jessie encountered Ash and the others, proving to be a strong battler each time.

Woobat's known moves are Gust and Air Slash.

Even I think that Best Wishes was the first saga with Team Rocket, I doubt that these Pokemon that they currently have on hand would have been something other than what I'm suggesting.

Ash's Raticate

I mean, even assuming that Ash had a Raticate in the series. And they could also be so.

Ash's Raticate
Raticate
A Gentleman aboard the St. Anne was challenging Trainers to battle his Raticate. Ash battled it with his Butterfree. Raticate's powerful Super Fang and Jump Kick attacks were no match for Butterfree, who paralyzed it with Stun Spore. Before Ash could order it to finish it off, however, the Gentleman forfeited, saying that Butterfree has shown how strong it is (although he could've just been concerned about Raticate). Afterwards, the Gentleman revealed that he was so impressed with Butterfree that he wanted to trade his Raticate for it. Ash, being impressed with the Raticate, and having asked Brock for advice, at which he told Ash he should trade (however, given that Brock was a little preoccupied with a woman at the moment, he may not have done this consciously), and so the two traded their Pokémon. However impressed Ash was with Raticate, he only used it once, mistakenly calling it out when he wanted to use his Butterfree's Stun Spore to help fight against the swarm of Team Rocket Grunts on board, as he had momentarily forgotten the trade had happened. Because he missed his Butterfree and he worried about how the Gentleman would treat it, he realized that the trade had been a bad idea and he would rather have his original Pokémon back. He wanted this so badly that he traded the Raticate back while the St. Anne was sinking, causing him and his friends to be trapped inside as it sank into the depths.

Because Ash only owned it for less than an entire episode, little can be said about Raticate itself. There is not enough known about it to even distinguish it from other Raticate, apart from the fact that it can use Jump Kick, a technique that cannot be learned by other Raticate, and that it is, in general, a strong Pokémon.

Woobat's known moves are Jump Kick, Hyper Fang and Super Fang.

Considering that Drew has no more pages to your other Pokemon, even if they having a huge impact on major episodes and even they having a lot of participation, Gardenia's Turtwig was deleted as well as the pages of Paul's Gliscor and Weaville.

I'm not suggesting a bulk deletion, but only one review as none of the Gym Leaders of Unova had a right page to your Pokemon (except for the main cast as Cilan, Chili and Iris of course) and some important recurring characters are suffering to get pages (like the Bianca's Pignite) as Luke and his Zorua (which was not exactly a prominence after his debut and most likely never see after the Battle Club arc) achieved this with only one episode. I just wanted to only a slight change in that would fit in the category "notability". Sorry if there is a writing error, it may have passed something in time for me post this.--Hikaru Wazana 22:05- 27 December 2011

I agree with you on Ash's Raticate, but not Jessie's Woobat. I think that its too much like her Seviper and Arbok to be deleted. Toon Ganondorf (t c) 02:53, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
