The Red Gyarados (Japanese: 赤いギャラドス Akai Gyarados) is an alternate color Gyarados. It is the result of a Team Rocket plot to induce evolution.

In the games

In Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, the Red Gyarados is found in the Lake of Rage. The player has one chance to catch it and the incident triggers the battle against Team Rocket in the Radio Tower in Goldenrod City.

Sightings of the Red Gyarados were international news. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl begins with a news report seen in Twinleaf Town of Sinnoh. The player goes to Trust Lake in hopes of seeing the Red Gyarados but without success.

While the most common way to obtain it is at the Lake of Rage in Gold, Silver and Crystal, any alternate color Gyarados will be the same. This is currently the only way to obtain a Red Gyarados from Generation III onwards.

In the anime

The Red Gyarados was first seen in Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution and Rage of Innocence. It went on a rampage down a river towards Mahogany Town but Lance eventually captured and calmed it.

It returned, along with its trainer, Lance, to help out Brock, May and Max during the fight between Groudon and Kyogre in Gaining Groudon and The Scuffle of Legends.
