The Pokémon League Reception Gate is a large guard house in Generation II located in Kanto to the west of Viridian City. The building serves as not only the badge checkpoint for Johto trainers but also as the only four-way intersection in Pokémon history that was not located in a populated area.

Description

Trainers entering Kanto from Johto via Route 27 and Route 26 are forced to enter this building from the south. Here, they are stopped by a Pokémon League official and must present the eight Johto badges before they can advance. Ahead of the guard post is a four-way intersection of hallways. The west hallway leads to Route 28 and Mt. Silver. The east branch leads to Route 22 and Viridian City. This path is closed until you go in from the Viridian Side. The north hallway leads to Victory Road and the Indigo Plateau.

Significance

The Reception Gate replaced Route 23 in many ways in Generation II. In other Generations, Route 22 led to Route 23 and the badge checkpoints were scattered throughout Route 23, checking for one badge at a time. This changed in Generation II as Route 22 now led to the Reception Gate and the badge checkpoints were consolidated into a single checkpoint in the Route 26 hallway.
