The eight quarter-finalists of the Unova Pokémon League tournament are unveiled. The tournament continues to be broadcast live, and at the gates of the tournament complex, Brycen is pleased to see that Black has regained his motivation after being encouraged by the Gym Leaders. On a deeper thought, Brycen recalls that the Gym Leaders ended up in a dark and quiet place, with no recollection of how they ended up there. With that thought in mind, Brycen heads back into the complex.

Meanwhile, Black is shocked to see Iris and Cheren among the quarter-finalists. Iris sheepishly states that she already obtained the eight badges before they met on the Tubeline Bridge. Having told Iris that Cheren is his best friend, Black vents his frustration that Cheren kept his badge-collecting a secret from him. Black tries to approach Cheren but the announcer stops him and orders each of the eight participants into their respective capsules, emphasizing that the participants not battling must remain in them.

Later, the draw is made, and the announcer unveils the Unova Elite Four, who take their seats on the balcony facing the audience. The audience sees that the Champion, meant to be shown alongside the Elite Four, is missing, but Drayden, speaking through a microphone, tells the audience that whoever wins the tournament gains the right to challenge the Elite Four. Usually the Champion is also challenged after the Elite Four, but due to special circumstances, the current Champion's absence is permitted and whoever beats the Elite Four will be crowned the new Champion.

With that, the announcer commences the first battle. Black, and the contestant that wears a fake nose, moustache and glasses, and calls himself "Lou Karr", are first up. The announcer also states that every battle will be a 3 vs. 3 battle, but the winner of each battle will be whoever is first to knock out any one of their opponent's Pokémon.

After Black calls out Tula, Lou calls out a Pokémon that he calls "Croagunk". The appearance of this Pokémon, never seen in Unova before, startles the audience, as well as Black who finds that his Pokédex does not recognize the Pokémon. The announcer says that Lou is a mysterious trainer who hails from a faraway region, and the six other contestants are sure to keep their eyes on him.

Black, however, is the one who wins the battle, having deduced Croagunk's typing through the fact that Tula's Signal Beam was not effective against it, and that Croagunk is capable of close-up physical attacks as well as firing poison barbs. He took advantage of this by having Tula use String Shot to capture the Electroweb that Croagunk blew off earlier, and trap Croagunk in it, before unleashing its own charge of electricity through the String Shot and Electroweb. Croagunk tumbles backwards towards Lou and he gets zapped as well.

Soon, the announcer declares Black the winner but finds that Lou has disappeared. Lou, who is in fact the International Police officer Looker, hides behind one of the audience stands and takes off his disguise. He receives a call from one of his superiors, and is shocked that his superiors were able to easily see through his disguise. Looker reveals that several other contestants appear to be disguised, and promises to report his findings as quickly as possible, before hanging up the call. He soon deduces that the contestant inside one of the capsules looks like one of the Seven Sages that he is seeking.

The eight quarter-finalists of the Unova Pokémon League tournament are unveiled. The tournament continues to be broadcast live, and at the gates of the tournament complex, Brycen is pleased to see that Black has regained his motivation after being encouraged by the Gym Leaders.
