Meanwhile, Ash and co. are traveling through Twist Mountain, but soon realize they are lost. Suddenly, they hear pounding. Pikachu and Axew then run along ahead, curious as to what it is. It turns out to be Ferris, a Pokémon archeologist, digging up fossils. With the help of his Drilbur's Slash, the fossil is successfully dug up. Ferris then notices Ash and friends, along with Pikachu and Axew. Ash, Iris, and Cilan are very impressed at what Ferris did, and Ferris says he is a Pokémon archeologist. They are then interrupted by Sierra, another archeologist. She then confronts Ferris, saying that neither he nor Ash and friends should be in an off-limits area. Cilan explains that they got lost, and Sierra offers to show them the way out. However, Ferris then interrupts to show her the Fossil he found. Sierra is not impressed, however, and calls Ferris an "amateur archeologist". This doesn't stop him though, and precedes to show the other archeologists his discovery. One of them apologizes to Ferris for not believing him, and asks what type of fossil it is. Ferris says he isn't sure yet, but will find out soon. Sierra, though, is still skeptical.

Later, at Ferris' place, he removes excess rock from the fossil, and proclaims it a Cover Fossil, without a doubt. Ferris then tells of how he befriended a Tirtouga once. He, Sierra, and his other friends were exploring that same area, despite it being off-limits. Ferris is having trouble keeping up with them, and stops to catch a breath. Sierra tells him that the group will be proceeding ahead, and then does so. Ferris then notices a bright light, and then uncovers the rock covering it. It happens to be a time hole, and Ferris is transported back in time. Upon arriving there, he befriends a Tirtouga. They play for a while, and then Ferris realizes that he should go back to his own time, as it's getting late. But before he does so, he gives Tirtouga his pendant. Back in the cave, Sierra and the other members of the group find Ferris, but before Ferris can explain, a boy in his group notices his pendant is missing, but assumes he dropped it somewhere.

Synopsis

Deep in an underground sewer, Team Rocket is talking to Dr. Zager about their next mission. Dr. Zager says that a Tirtouga will be needed, or its evolved form, Carracosta. James notes that first they have to obtain a Cover Fossil, but Dr. Zager says he has already detected evidence of one in Twist Mountain. Dr. Zager wishes them luck, and the trio heads over there.
