Contrary (Japanese: あまのじゃく Devil's Advocate) is an Ability introduced in Generation V. Seven Pokémon can have this Ability.
Effect
In battle
This Ability causes all effects that would lower a stat to increase it instead, and all effects that would increase a stat to decrease it instead.
This also applies to self-inflicted moves, such as Curse and Leaf Storm. This Ability only reverses the changes when they are applied; it does not passively cause all existing changes to reverse; therefore, if the Ability Contrary is no longer in effect or the stats are Baton Passed, all existing stat modifications remain the same. Stats Baton Passed onto a Pokémon with Contrary are not reversed.
If a move used by a Pokémon with Mold Breaker, Terravolt, or Turboblaze would induce a stat modification in a Pokémon with Contrary, the stat modification will not reverse.
Outside of battle
Contrary has no effect outside of battle.
