An exchangeable item is an item that serves no purpose other than being traded for another item or some sort of service. These exclude certain key items, which are required to continue the story.

Heart Scales

Heart Scale

A Heart Scale is the scale of a Luvdisc. It is an item that was introduced in Generation III that can be traded in to a man known as a Move relearner residing in Fallarbor Town in Hoenn and Pastoria City in Sinnoh to let a Pokémon learn a move it could have learned at a previous level. Heart Scales are abundant in both generations, being found underwater in Hoenn or attached to some wild Luvdisc, or being able to be mined in Sinnoh's Underground. They are apparently one of the Underground's most common items, after the spheres, but they are also the smallest items in the Underground, making them slightly harder to find.

Shards

Main article: Shard

These items, also introduced in Generation III, come in different colors: red, blue, green, and yellow. They can be exchanged for the elemental Evolutionary stones in Hoenn, and in groups of ten or four for the TMs containing weather-modifying moves or special move tutor moves (the latter only in Pokémon Platinum) in Sinnoh. They can be found lying around in certain areas, attached to certain Pokémon, or in the Underground of Sinnoh.

Apricorns

Main article: Apricorn

These items are exclusive to Generation II. There are several different colors, and they can be made into different Poké Balls by Kurt in Azalea Town.

Tinymushroom and Big Mushroom

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, due to Luvdisc, as well as most other Generation III Pokémon, being not native to either the Kanto or Sevii Islands regions, these items replace the function of the Heart Scales. The Move Tutor for these games is located in Two Island (town), and he asks for two Tinymushrooms or one Big Mushroom to teach a Pokémon a move it could learn at an earlier level. Both these items are often attached to Kanto-native Pokémon Paras and Parasect, the Tinymushroom being much more common than the Big Mushroom. However, outside these two games, they serve no purpose other than gaining money from selling them; this is why these items are also considered valuable items.

Shoal Shell and Shoal Salt

These items were introduced in Generation III, and although they can exist in the Generation IV games through Pal Park transferring, they aren't useful at all and cannot be found in those games. These items can be found in the Shoal Cave in Hoenn, and if the player collects four of each, they can be exchanged for a Shell Bell with a man near the entrance to the cave.
