Walkthrough:Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky/Chapter 9

Steam Cave

Steam Cave is 8 floors, a rest stop, then 7 more floors before the peak. The primary type here is fire and bug. This is one of the few places during main story where Grass-types face a type disadvantage and the first dungeon with the rest stop, which divide certain places into parts. You can save your game here; additionally your team HP, PP and Belly are also restored when you reach this place.

There are still some Pokémon here to watch out for:

  • Snubbull and Granbull, like Aerodactyl, have quite the type variety of flinching moves, as well as possibly Charm and Scary Face.
  • All of Slugma's moves can inflict some sort of status on you: poison, sleep, burn or cringing.
  • Magby and Magmar not only can poison or burn you, but also have SmokeScreen to make your moves completely miss enemies, eventually adding possibility of Faint Attack, which never misses.
  • Numel is likely to have Magnitude, which hits every other Pokémon for damage that ignores your stats but still takes into account its and your types; taking it down should be priority, especially as a Fire-type.
  • Farfetch'd might have with Fury Cutter, Fury Attack, or Aerial Ace.
  • Kricketune can have Fury Cutter, and towards the end of its appearance, Sing to put you to sleep.
  • Volbeat might confuse you with Confuse Ray, while Illumise can reduce your attack with Charm. Both of them can also have Moonlight, which heals every ally on the entire floor.

The Boss

Your team hears roaring at the peak and heavy footsteps before the scene cuts back to the guild. Corphish shows them the statue. The guild hears a roar from above and take off to help you but not before Diglett hears a groan- there's not time to investigate, they have to aid your team! On the other side of the clearing, beyond some waterfalls, Team Skull have been taken down by Wigglytuff who is nowhere to be seen.

Back on the peak, Groudon appears and demands you leave. On the way up, Chatot remarks that fighting Groudon would be foolish.

Reviver Seeds may be useful here to help if you faint. Geo Pebbles or Gravelerocks may also be helpful to keep distance between yourself and Groudon. Groudon's Drought ability will cause Sunny weather to appear, which boosts Fire-type moves but weakens Water-type moves, one of its weakness, so it'd be more reliable to have Grass moves. Remember that it can still be hit by Electric moves in this game; chance to inflict paralysis can be helpful!

Unusually for this point in the game, Groudon possesses IQ of 330, granting it access to two notable IQ skills: Wary Fighter and Counter Hitter. The former will make it step back a tile after it misses an attack, while the latter gives it a 12% chance to strike back at an attacker for 1/4 of the damage it takes from an adjacent hit.

Boss movesets are not fixed in this game and instead pick from a pool of moves (with the previous two boss fights simply having 4 or less moves). Groudon is guaranteed to know Bulk Up, which will make Mud Shot or Slash hit harder. The other three known moves will vary between the following: Mud Shot, Scary Face, AncientPower (be careful of the potential boost!) and Slash.

When defeated, Groudon disappears. That was only a illusion cast by Uxie who is the true guardian of Fogbound Lake. Uxie leads your team to the lake.

At Fogbound Lake

Uxie shows you a beautiful lake with Volbeat and Illumise floating like colorful lights over the water. The team is in awe at the view as Uxie explains how water flows up to form the lake and tells them to look towards the glowing light in the middle of the lake. As soon as you spot the glowing light, your heart began to beat faster than usual.

Uxie tells you this is the Time Gear, the sole reason Uxie is there guarding the area. Normally the illusion of Groudon is enough to stop intruders, but if they defeat it, Uxie erases their memories. Curious, your partner asks if Uxie did this to you and they say no, they only erase memories of Fogbound Lake and don't have the power to fully erase all memories from living beings.

Wigglytuff arrives then, more excited by the view than disappointed at the lack of treasure. The rest of the guild arrives shortly after this and you all enjoy the view of the Volubeat and Illumise flying in front of a geyser for a while.

You're still confused on why this place feels familiar and why you feel uneasy when looking at the Time Gear.

After a few moments here, Uxie says it won't take away the memory of this place as the guild has earned its trust, but asks you all to keep it a secret to which Wigglytuff agrees. After all, another Time Gear has already been stolen so this one must stay safe. Your guild cheers before heading out.

By finishing the expedition, the Treasure Bag gets expanded to 40 slots. Additionally, you will be granted access to the second Special Episode.
