Talk:SWSH Black Star Promos (TCG)

Latest comment: 4 March 2025 by Maverick Nate in topic Move templates

SWSH039 (Pikachu) I noticed has a recent variant printed for the 25th Anniversary Pokémon tie in with General Mills cereals which features the 25th Anniversary logo stamped on the lower left corner, and uses that Holo I've only seen in General Mill holo cards.--Teh supar hackr (talk) 13:59, 13 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

So there is a filter button in TCG Live for this group of cards, which says "Sword & Shield Series Black Star Promos". Aside from demonstrating why "(TCG)" as a secret prefix is misleading even on the good days, I believe it also means this page should be moved. Salmancer (talk) 00:27, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Oh yeah, should probably mention why it's a problem. All the filter buttons for the main expansions do include "Pokémon TCG:". This means the promos lacking "Pokémon TCG:" is very much intentional. Salmancer (talk) 00:34, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

TCG Live is a 3rd party client. Thus, it's not as strong a source for non-exclusive topics like this subject's true title than primary first hand sources would be. MaverickNate 03:30, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
"We’re always working to innovate the Pokémon TCG, and with the Pokémon TCG Online app launching over 10 years ago, it made sense to update the game and bring that work in-house to help ensure a seamless and holistic Pokémon TCG ecosystem for fans." - Pokémon TCG Online Sunset Information
(Well, that, and the Apple App Store out and out says "The developer, THE POKEMON COMPANY INTERNATIONAL, INC...". And Google Play. And the Bulbapedia article on this very site.)
I say again: If The Pokémon Company International is not an authority on the franchise the company was designed to manage, then who is? Where are you going to find a The Pokémon Company (non-international) name for a concept that doesn't exist in Japan? (because if S-P Promotional cards (TCG) is any indication, English promos and Japanese promos are indeed separate groups) Commune with the PokéGods? Salmancer (talk) 23:59, 7 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Returning to this having done some proper research, while TPCi does have in-house devs for Live, they also do a significant amount of contracting out for parts of dev work. That isn't to say it couldn't be used as a source for this, but it puts it sufficiently lower on the credibility scale for global terminology than I as EiC am willing to prioritize, since we wouldn't exactly know which parts are decreed by the TPCi people and what parts are the third parties acting on their own accord based on their needs at the time.
As for the title of the page, here is why I think we already have the page at the best title. I will preface this by saying that there isn't exactly a 'right' answer here: since TPCi themselves are sufficiently inconsistent themselves, it's going to have to be us choosing what is best overall.
  • We know that from resources like decklists and communications on pokemon.com that the base name for promotional cards is Black Star Promos. In an ideal world, we'd be naming them this, but we unfortunately can't.
  • We do see the official site abbreviating it to "<abbreviation> Black Star Promos" occasisonally when priotizing brevity: XY Black Star Promo. This also has the added benefit of matching what is printed on the card: XY###. While we also see things like XY—Promo, we would want to prioritize the one that still has the base name listed above.
  • The Manual of Style generally allows abbreviations that we see from official sources, especially when those items share a naming convention. These sets of promotional cards would qualify for that. While we haven't excplicitly seen every abbreviation, I think we're fine to extrapolate the ones we haven't seen as doing so would maintain the title that matches what is both on the card and what is recognized as primary in the community/by readers.
I'm going to remove the move tag. I don't think there's enough of a consistent use throughout the franchise to pull this single group away from the rest. We can note that this name is also seen and create a redirect however MaverickNate 06:04, 4 March 2025 (UTC)Reply
