Talk:List of Pokémon by Alola Pokédex number
Do we really need to disambig this?
I would also include previous regions into this discussion (Unova, Hoenn, possibly Johto) but in my opinion we would be better served by having one page for each regional Pokédex. some of our EP partners already do this for example the German Pokéwiki here. I see a few benefits to this setup:
1) It allows for an easy direct comparison of changes to a regions's Pokédex without opening multiple tabs.
2) It avoids a problem where when you click on the dex listing in any species page, the link on the tab is formatted to direct to the region's Pokédex page which in these cases is a disambiguating, creating extra tension. this could technically be solved on a template level but I still think its easier to have a single page. There is also a problem with the Gen 2 Pokédex listings redirecting to the HGSS Pokédex number page.
I think the simplest, cleanest and most useful solution to these problems is to merge the pages back onto the disambiguation pages, so I would suggest we consider this. 4iamking 16:08, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- this only works if both pokedexes are displayed side by side which i don't think a single article on the wiki currently does, and either way it absolutely won't work on mobile. here's an example of what it looks like when both are on a single article (it's huge) Superstarxalien (talk) 17:18, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- While it is true that on mobile they would still have to be displayed one after another (owing to the narrow screen size); I still dont believe this to be that much of an issue because at least on the default skin the page sections would be collapsed and easily expandable if you are only interested in seeing one of the Pokédex's. You can open the German wiki's page on mobile as an example and I do think it does work. As for displaying side-by side lists, it might not be as long of a list but it has been done on various TCG pages before for example here and here. I would recommend we use divs rather than table hacks if we do this however to maximize mobile compatibility. 4iamking 17:35, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- This seems equivalent to the idea that was recently suggested to put the Lumiose and Hyperspace Pokédexes on the same page, and that idea was rejected because they're separate entities with unique numbering. By that logic, shouldn't these Pokédexes stay separate too? Storm Aurora (talk) 21:16, 1 January 2026 (UTC)
- I don't see it as being the same thing. It was rejected there because the Hyperspace Dex is a different Pokédex from the Lumiose Dex, not just in numbering but also in name and had no overlap to the Lumiose Dex. This is not the case with the regional lists which that just got an update in a secondary version/sequel. We put the Platinum Dex on the same page as the Sinnoh dex already, but there all the new Pokémon added in the later version were just thrown at the end of the dex. In the other regions they were kind of inserted in the middle which offset a bunch of other Pokémon numbers. Fundamentally the Pokédex in SM and USUM is still the "Alola Dex" in both games, that really the difference. Also I just wanted to say im not suggesting splitting it off by island which is what Wikidex is doing to make that large article (4 islands x 2 games with a lot of duplicates). 4iamking 21:48, 1 January 2026 (UTC)

I don't really understand the benefit of this change? They're different pages because they're different listings. Putting them on the same page doesn't really streamline anything, it just means it takes longer to load and you have to scroll for longer to reach the USUM version. I also don't see the problem with the species page dex listings linking to a disambiguation, if anything I'd say that's more helpful. Hewer (talk) 11:58, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
- It's unnecessary and forces extra friction because it's another page that needs to be loaded when we already know the readers intended target, in that sense it kinda functions as a "are you sure you really want to see this list and not that list" page. Disambigs function as a search aid but best practice is always to avoid linking to them unless absolutely necessary to clarify an uncertainty in the readers intended target, which in this case it doesn't do. 4iamking 13:31, 2 January 2026 (UTC)
- Personally, if I clicked one of those links in search of the USUM listing, I would find it much more convenient to be sent to a disambiguation where I can just click another link and go right there than to be sent to a combined page with longer loading time and then having to scroll past the 300 Pokémon of the SM listing before I get to what I'm looking for. If convenience is the goal then the best solution would be to just change the template so that those links don't lead to the disambiguation. Also it's worth noting that we don't always know the reader's intended target here; Pikipek, for example, has the same number in both Alola Pokédexes, so it only has one link.
