History

TV Tokyo was launched on April 12, 1964 as Science Television Tokyo Channel 12 (Japanese: 科学テレビ東京12チャンネルテレビ, Kagaku Terebi Tōkyō Jūni-channeru Terebi) and was originally owned by the Science and Technology Promotion Foundation. In 1968, ownership of the channel moved to a separate company known as Tokyo Channel 12 Production, Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社東京12チャンネルプロダクション, Kabushiki gaisha Tōkyō 12 Channeru Purodakushon). In 1973, the station changed its name to Tokyo Channel 12, Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社東京12チャンネル, Kabushiki gaisha Terebi Tōkyō Jūni-channeru). Another name change in 1981 gave the station its current name, Television Tokyo Channel 12, Ltd. (Japanese: 株式会社テレビ東京, Kabushiki gaisha Terebi Tōkyō). In 2004, following its IPO, the company changed its English name to TV Tokyo Corporation. In 2010, TV Tokyo, alongside TV Tokyo Broadband and BS Japan merged to form a holding company known as TV Tokyo Holdings. TV Tokyo became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, retaining its operational structure instead of a major restructuring of TV Tokyo.
