Another major change from the original games was the splitting of the {{Stat|Special}} stat into {{Stat|Special Attack}} and {{Stat|Special Defense}}. Again, this increased aspects of strategy, for Pokémon were now more specialized. Some were good special attackers, while others were better physical attackers; the same now held true for Defense and Special Defense. For example, {{p|Cloyster}} has a decent Special stat in Generation I, but in all later games, has a decent Special Attack, but low Special Defense.

==Glitch==
One of the biggest glitches in GSC is the ability to "clone" Pokémon. To clone a Pokémon a player would deposit the Pokémon they wanted to clone into a box on the PC. Then they would switch to a different box and while the game was being saved you would turn off the game and restart it. Then you would find a copy of the Pokémon in your party as well as a copy of the Pokémon in your PC box. This glitch is used mainly to receive many high level Pokémon and multiple rare items by making the Pokémon hold an item.
