Release information
This card was released as a Rare Holofoil card in the Neo Genesis expansion, with a different effect from its original Japanese release in the Gold, Silver, to a New World... expansion. This print misaligned Mind Blast's damage to the top instead of the center.
Rulings
- In the Japanese release, Mind Games can only be used if Slowking is the Active Pokémon. In the English release, the Active Pokémon stipulation was removed. This allows it to be used from the Bench, allowing players to use multiple Slowking to further reduce the odds of a Trainer card being successfully played to as low as to 1 in 16. Slowking became extremely popular, with games often coming down to who could play multiple Slowking first to shut their opponent out of search and draw power and clog their draws, all while being essentially shielded from attacks due to being on the Bench. Due to its widely perceived negative influence on gameplay, the card was banned from the Modified format at the end of 2002.
- This card received errata to clarify how Mind Games interacts with Chaos Gym. A Trainer card that fails to be used is to go atop its original owner's deck, not the deck of the player who attempted to use it.
Trivia
- This card was the last specific card to be banned from any official event until the Sandy Cloak Wormadam card from Secret Wonders and POP Series 7 was banned from the 2008 North American Professor Cup, after dominating the 2008 European Professor Cup due in part to being printed in POP Series 7 as an
