Seel stage (Play It!)

How do I start a game? in the Learn menu of Pokémon Play It!, also known as the Seel stage (Basic stage 2) in the Play menu of Pokémon Play It! Version 2, is a short tutorial explaining how to start a Trading Card Game battle between the player and Julie.

Gameplay

Tutorial

At the beginning, the small square with Julie is blurred, and she says that she can't see the player, but it quickly goes back to normal. Julie explains the first steps of a Trading Card Game match:

  • Julie and the player's decks are shuffled
  • they take seven cards from the deck into the hand
  • they choose an Active Pokémon and place it face-down in the Arena
  • they take three cards from their deck as Prizes
  • the player flips a coin to see who plays first

The player is required to click on the deck to draw the seven cards into their hand. The player's initial hand depends on the game:

In both games, there is a single Basic Pokémon available in their hand (BulbasaurPI1 or SeelPI2). The player is required to use it as their Active Pokémon. The player is free to try to place any of the other cards in the Arena instead, but this would not be a legal move; doing so only causes Julie to comment about why this does not work. Julie will also place her active Pokémon face-down, later revealed to be PikachuPI1 or GoldeenPI2.

The player is required to click on the deck again to take the three Prize cardsPI1 or one Prize cardPI2, and then click on the flip button, to flip the coin. The result will be heads, meaning the player will go first. Julie and the player turn their Active Pokémon cards face-up.

In this stage, the three buttons to control Julie's speech (in the second game only) are deactivated. These buttons are gray in this stage (unlike some other stages, where the buttons would be red, yellow, and green) and don't do anything when clicked.

In the first game, Julie says that the match will have three Prize cards, but she will interrupt the game before it starts. In the second game, there is a full match ending when the player wins one Prize card.

Match against Julie

This match is only played in Pokémon Play It! Version 2.

  • The player's Seel has 60 HP. It has only one attack: Headbutt, which deals 10 damage.
  • Julie's Goldeen has 40 HP. It also only one attack: Horn Attack, which deals 10 damage as well.

At the start of each turn, the player will draw another Water Energy card.

Winning the match

The player is able to win by attaching a Water Energy card to Seel, and then using Seel's Headbutt four times (in four turns) to knock out Julie's Goldeen. The player is free to attach multiple Water Energy cards (one per turn), but this would not help, as only one Water Energy is required for Seel's attack. Once Goldeen is knocked out, the player wins by taking the single Prize card, revealed to be a Squirtle (even though this card won't be used in the current match, since the player has already won).

Losing the match

Julie will attempt to win by attaching a Water Energy to Goldeen and then using Goldeen's Horn Attack six times (in six turns). If the player ends their turn 3 times without attacking, Julie will be able to play enough turns to win.

Quotes

Main article: Julie (Play It!)/Quotes

These are Julie's quotes in this stage.

(Julie's screen is blurred.)
"Hey! Can you hear me? I can't see you."
(Julie's screen goes back to normal.)
"Oh. That's better. So, let's go over how to begin a game. There's a couple of important steps we need to go over."
"And these rules apply to the computer game and the card game you bought. So, listen up!"PI2
"First thing you do when you start a new game: shuffle your deck. Since the computer is so cool, heh, it'll do it for us. Watch!"
(The player's and Julie's decks are shuffled.)
"OK, the next thing you do: draw seven cards from your deck into your hand. Do that! Click on your deck to draw seven cards."
(The deck keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 10 secondsPI1/13 secondsPI2 until the player does as told:
"Go ahead, click on your deck!"
  • When the player does as told (drawing 7 cards from the deck):
"Good! I'll draw seven cards too."
(Julie draws seven cards.)
"Remember: When playing with real cards, don't let the opponent see the cards on your hand! Don't lay them on the table, silly!"PI2
"Now pick one Pokémon from your hand to be your Active Pokémon. That's the one that goes into battle in the Arena."
  • Repeated every 10 secondsPI1/13 secondsPI2 until the player does as told:
"Go ahead! Drag a Pokémon from your hand to the Arena."
(The card returns to the hand.)
"No, that's not a Pokémon card! Drag a Pokémon card to the Arena."PI1
"That's not a Pokémon! Try again!"PI2
(The card returns to the hand.)
"Ivysaur is an evolved Pokémon, so it can't go into the Arena by itself. Remember, you always play the evolved Pokémon on top of another, basic Pokémon."PI1
"Wartortle is an evolved Pokémon, so it can't go into the Arena by itself. Evolved Pokémon are always played on top of other, basic Pokémon."PI2
(The Pokémon is placed face-down in the Arena.)
"OK, that's good. Did you notice how that Pokémon would enter the Arena face-down? Well, you're supposed to do that at the beginning of the game, so I don't see your choice. I'm gonna play my Pokémon too! Huh! I'm sure I'll win."
(Julie places a card face-down in the Arena.)
"So let's play for three Prizes, OK? That means the first one to knock out three Pokémon wins. So three cards from your deck go into the prize pile."PI1
"Let's play for one Prize, OK? That means the first one to knock out a Pokémon wins. Normally, we'd play for three Prizes, but we'll keep the game simple for now."PI2
(The deck keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • When the player clicks on the deck:
(Three cardsPI1 or one cardPI2 from the player's deck go into their prize pile.)
"Mine too!"PI1
(Three cardsPI1 or one cardPI2 from the Julie's deck go into her prize pile.)
"OK. Now, we flip a coin to see who goes first! Tails: I go first. Heads: you go first."
"Now click on the flip button."PI1
  • Repeated every 16 seconds until the player does as told:
"Hello! Wake up! Are you alive? Come one, click on the flip button!"PI2
(In both games, the flip button keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 10 seconds until the player does as told:
"Now click on the flip button."
(The result of the coin flip will be heads.)
"Heads! You go first. So, the last thing we do is turn all our Pokémon cards over. Let's get the computer to do that!"
(Both Active Pokémon are revealed: the player's BulbasaurPI1 or SeelPI2, as well as Julie's PikachuPI1 or GoldeenPI2.)
"Excellent! Now, we can start playing! But, I gotta go. I would've won anyway though. Hm. When you're ready, we'll play a real game. For now, let's go back to the menu."PI1
(The return button keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 10 seconds until the player does as told:
"Click on 'return'."PI1

Battle quotes

The battle below is only played in Pokémon Play It! Version 2 (as it was interrupted before it started in the previous game).

"Excellent! Alright, let's start the game. Goldeen versus Seel. I'm ready."
(The deck keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
  • Repeated every 13 seconds until the player does as told:
"Hey, draw a card!"
(When the player draws another Water Energy card.)
  • Repeated every 13 seconds until the player does as told:
"Hey come on! Go ahead and put 1 Energy card on Seel, or something!"
  • If the player attempts to place the Wartortle card on top of Seel:
"Take a close look at Wartortle. It evolves from Squirtle, not Seel. So you can't put Wartortle on top of Seel."
  • If the player wins the game:
"Oh man, I lost! Well, good job! Click on the return button to go back to the Gymnasium!"
(The return button keeps blinking with a sound effect until the player clicks on it.)
