Draft:Orange Islands Badges
In the Orange Islands, the Orange League's four Gyms give out badges which can qualify Trainers for the right to challenge the Supreme Gym Leader. Unlike other Gyms which often rely on battles to determine if a Trainer is qualified, Orange League Gyms often rely on or supplement their test with non-battle challenges.

In the anime
Pokémon the Series
In Fit To Be Tide, Ash challenges Cissy to a battle, which involves two tests: a Water Gun target challenge, which ends in a draw; and then a Pokémon Wave Ride race that Ash narrowly wins due to quick thinking and his Lapras's Ice Beam. This earns him the Coral-Eye Badge from Cissy.
In Navel Maneuvers, Ash challenges Danny, but before that, he must climb the mountain the Gym is located on without the aid of his Pokémon or be disqualified. Danny gives Ash three challenges. In the first, their Pokémon must freeze a geyser, and Danny wins handily. The second requires having a trio of Pokémon carve a sled from the frozen geyser, and when Ash includes Charizard, they almost lose until Charizard unexpectedly wins the round with Flamethrower. In the final round, they use the sled in a race down the mountain, which Ash narrowly wins.
In Misty Meets Her Match, when Ash challenges Rudy, Rudy first challenges Ash to knock down targets from aboard a moving boat. After Ash clears this, Rudy organizes a battle where they will face each other in three rounds, each time using a Pokémon of the same type, all while surrounded by treacherous cliffs. Ash loses the first battle, but manages to win the next two to earn the Spike Shell Badge.
In Pokémon Double Trouble, Luana's challenge is a relatively simple Double Battle. While Ash's choice of Pikachu and Charizard results in some crossfire, they manage to come together to trick Luana's Pokémon into taking each other out and win the battle, earning the Jade Star Badge for Ash.
In the manga
The Electric Tale of Pikachu
In The Electric Tale of Pikachu, Ash is shown to be gathering the Orange League badges, but they are never named or shown in much detail. Since the anime and manga stories were released around the same time, it's possible that The Electric Tale of Pikachu did not have concrete images or names to work with.
At the beginning of The Orange Islands, Ash notes that Mikan Island is the closest island, but he misses the boat. At the end of the chapter, he sets out on Lapras, but at the start of the next chapter, he arrives at the Seven Grapefruit Islands, so it's unclear if he found his way to Mikan Island before, after, or at all. (Considering that the story generally parallels Pokémon the Series, presumably he is meant to have visited it between chapters, since The Orange Islands corresponds to The Lost Lapras, the episode before Ash earned the Coral-Eye Badge.)
Over the course of You Bet Your Wife, Ash is seen to have three badges and earn a fourth. At the beginning of the chapter, he is walking away from Navel Gym while tossing three badges in the air, with the front of two being visible, and none seem to resemble the badges seen in the anime. Throughout the rest of the chapter, Ash discovers the Trovita Gym and eventually defeats Rudy, earning his final badge, but it is never shown or named.
