Draft:Level 101+ Pokémon glitches
These are glitches that affect level 101+ Pokémon.
Generation I
Leveling up with Rare Candies
In Generation I only, a Pokémon can be leveled up with Rare Candies up to level 255. If a Rare Candy is used on a level 255 Pokémon, its level will be reset to 0 due to an overflow in a single byte.

Experience overflow
In Generation I, a Pokémon's experience is correctly calculated only up to the maximum possible value of 16,777,215 (three bytes), after which there is an overflow. The affected Pokémon can still level up normally by the use of Rare Candies after the overflow, but the current experience value as seen in the summary will be capped. This happens at level 237 in the Slow growth rate, or 241 in the Medium Slow growth rate. The Fast and Medium Fast growth rates are not affected.
Summary experience cap
In Generation I, the Pokémon's experience displayed on the summary screen may be missing some digits if the Pokémon has a high enough experience.
If a Pokémon's growth rate is Fast or Medium Fast, its experience is shown normally up to 6 digits. If it has at least 7 digits, then only the latest 6 digits are displayed in its summary. For instance, 1234567 experience is displayed as 234567.
If a Pokémon's growth rate is Slow or Medium Slow, its experience is shown normally up to 7 digits. If it has at least 8 digits, then only the 6 rightmost digits are displayed normally while any digits at the left are replaced by glitched pixels. For instance, 12345678 is replaced by [glitched pixels]345678.
Generations I and II
Leveling up in battle
In Generations I and II, if a Pokémon above level 100 levels up due to experience in battle, its level will be reset to 100.
In Generation II, if a Pokémon levels "down" to 100 in battle, it will attempt to learn all of its level-up moves between levels 1 and 100 (other than moves it already knows).
Pay Day glitches
| This move effect may be in need of research. Reason: Check the behavior for Levels 101-255 and 0 in Generation IV and up You can discuss this on the talk page. |
Generations I and II
If the user has a level higher than 100, Pay Day still works as usual up to level 127, scattering up to $254 per use. This move would scatter $0 if the user is level 0, but no message is displayed. However, if the user's level is between 128 and 255, Pay Day scatters an amount of money equal to . For instance, Pay Day scatters $0 at level 128, $100 at level 178, and $254 at level 255.
Generation III
Unlike Generation I and II, Pay Day gives the expected amount of money for Levels 101-255 (five times the level; so a maximum of $1275 per use). As before, this move would scatter $0 if the user is level 0, but no message is displayed.
Due to a minor glitch in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the wrong amount of money will be displayed if the Amulet Coin is held (including for Levels 1-100). The correct amount is still gained after the battle. This error was fixed in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and all subsequent games.
Obtaining level 101+ Pokémon
Generation I
Pokémon over level 100 are obtainable through the old man glitch.
Generation II
Pokémon over Level 100 cannot be traded from Generation I into Generation II due to a message that the Pokémon is abnormal, but it is possible to obtain one in Generation II with a means of arbitrary code execution such as the Coin Case glitch.
Generation III
Pokémon over Level 100 can be obtained using an arbitrary code execution method such as viewing a glitch Pokémon's animation or using a glitch move from Glitzer Popping.
