In Pokémon GO, there are habitats that determine what type of wild Pokémon may spawn in each real-world location. In the absence of Lure Modules or Incenses, wild Pokémon will only spawn in finite, fixed locations referred to as spawn points. Each spawn point is also assigned a specific biome attribute and may sometimes be a part of a nest.

Biomes

Each spawn point is assigned a biome property that determines the pool and distribution of species that may appear. For instance, Water-type Pokémon like Wailmer would be more likely to appear near bodies of water, while Sandshrew is more likely to spawn in a desert location. Burmy's form also depends on the biome of the spawn point. A spawn point's biome is not necessarily based directly off the real-world terrain, as it is possible for two spawn points that are right next to each other to spawn completely different types of Pokémon or forms of Burmy.

Nests

A nest is an area in Pokémon GO where a certain species of Pokémon spawn at a significantly higher rate, usually located at a park. Usually, nests will rotate every 14 days, and the player may receive a notification from the game when it happens.
