Chunsoft is a Japanese video game developer specializing in console RPGs. It was founded by Koichi Nakamura, a video game designer from Enix. They are known in the Pokémon community as the developers of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.

Gameplay formula

The gameplay of most, if not all, of Chunsoft's games involve the following points:

  • "Mystery Dungeons" with randomized floors each time one enters.
  • Standard attacks, which don't cost anything.
  • Special attacks, which cost "power".
  • Traps hidden on the ground.

Criticism

The repetitive nature of the games has led to some criticism. While Chunsoft has, indeed, created several games for many famous franchises (including Final Fantasy's Chocobo's Dungeon), not once has it even slightly changed the points stated above. This leads to several critics saying that the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series is "just another Mystery Dungeon game with Pokémon characters slapped on".
