A Sage (Japanese: ぼうず Monk) is a type of Pokémon Trainer that first debuted in the Generation II games. They appear to be Buddhist monks who are mostly only found in Johto's Sprout Tower, Ecruteak Gym, and Tin Tower.

They generally use Bellsprout and Hoothoot. The ones in Ecruteak Gym use Gastly and Haunter. Their sprites were edited outside of Japan, presumably due to Nintendo's policy (at the time) of removing all religious references in games.

In Generation IV, older members of Sage are called Elders. Their sprites are again edited, removing the prayer beads and slightly recoloring their robes. Also, their title is changed from Monk to Aesthetic.
