Route 2 is a fairly long path that runs from Viridian City to Pewter City in Kanto.
To get from one end to the other, some travelers must pass through Viridian Forest which covers one half of the route on the west. The forest is a considerably long and inconvient detour unless catching Bug-type Pokémon is the goal.
If a Pokémon Trainer has a Pokémon that knows Cut, along with the Badge to use that move out of battle, they can take a shortcut.
They can cut away the bushes on the east and access several houses. One house contains someone who will trade a rare Mr. Mime for a Clefairy or an Abra.
Taking the eastern path through Route 2 will also open up the way to one of the ends of Diglett's Cave. The other end of the cave opens up next to Vermilion City on Route 11.
Some items found on Route 2 include a Moon Stone, and a HP Up.
