Map of the Kanto region

The Kanto region (Japanese: カントー Kantō) is a large area located east of Johto. Named after the real Kanto region in Japan, it is the first region explored by the Generation I games Pokémon Green, Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow and in the Generation III games Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Kanto is also accessible in the Generation II games Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. Professor Oak is the resident Pokémon professor and gives trainers a choice between Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle as their choice for a starter Pokémon. In the games, you begin your journey in Pallet Town and work your way through the Indigo Plateau to become the League Champion.

In the Second Generation games, trainers may travel from Johto to Kanto and notice these changes have occurred in the region as a result of 3 years having passed between Red/Blue and Gold/Silver/Crystal:

  • Safari Zone is closed.
  • Unknown Dungeon has been blocked off.
  • Cinnabar Island was destroyed, and its gym relocated temporarily to the Seafoam Islands.
  • Viridian Forest and Mt. Moon changed in size.
  • Power Plant becomes functional.
  • Pokémon Tower has became a radio tower.
  • Blue has remade Giovanni's former gym and is Gym Leader.
  • Janine takes over Fuchsia Gym after father Koga is promoted to Elite 4.

In Generation III

In Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, you are able to visit the first three in a chain of islands known as the Sevii Islands, located south of Kanto. They are unlocked once you beat Blaine on Cinnabar Island. After you beat the Elite Four, you can then visit the other islands which make up this archipelago.
