• This is the first time Ash has ever deliberately hurt a Pokémon, slamming his shoe in J's Drapion's eye.
• Because of Ash's sensitivity to Aura, which was first introduced in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, he is able to sense Riolu from far distances.
• J actually seems as if she is trying to kill Ash, not merely get rid of him.
• The traveling on Dodrio could be another reference to the new features in Pokemon Ranger Battonage, the Field Ability called Ride.
