Synopsis

While staying at a Pokémon Center on their way to Veilstone City, Dawn and her friends run into Zoey. Dawn learns that Kenny has just won his second ribbon and the next Contest will be held in Solaceon Town, and as it's on the way to Veilstone anyway, Ash agrees to head there first. Although Zoey tells Dawn that she's going to pass on the Solaceon Contest, the two Coordinators can't resist having a practice battle. Meanwhile Ash has Chimchar and Aipom battle each other to train for his upcoming Gym battle. But Buizel is distracted by the battle between Chimchar and Aipom, enjoying seeing them battle with raw power while Dawn is trying to get him to work on how to pull off his moves with style. Aipom is having a similar problem, as she keeps trying to watch the Contest battle between Buizel and Zoey's Glameow, and ends up performing attacks as if they were being used in a Contest. It seems as if Buizel would rather be battling while Aipom would rather be in a Contest, so Zoey makes a bold suggestion: why doesn't Dawn trade Buizel for Ash's Aipom?

Inside the Pokémon Center, Dawn and Ash approach the trade machine, however the two trainers aren't sure if a trade is a good idea. Ash explains that he feels bad taking Buizel as Dawn has put in a lot of hard work getting him ready for contests, and Dawn tells the others that she knows Ash and Aipom have a special bond and she doesn't want to be the one to take Aipom away. Nurse Joy understands their reluctance, as she explains that just as a Pokémon adjusts to their trainer, a trainer also adjusts to their Pokémon. This gives Ash an idea and he suggests that he use Buizel to battle Brock, and Dawn can use Aipom to battle Zoey. But before the battle can get very far, Jessie and Meowth show up in disguise. James is miserable now that Cacnea is gone, so his teammates are determined to cheer him up-by stealing Aipom and Buizel!

But James, unaware of the plan, accidentally blows Team Rocket's cover. Jessie's Seviper uses Haze and Team Rocket makes a grab for Aipom and Buizel anyway, but they end up snagging Glameow and Sudowoodo instead. Ash and Dawn decide to use each others Pokémon to battle Team Rocket, and it soon becomes clear that Buizel is far more suited to Ash's attacking style, while Aipom's flair works well with Dawn's contest moves. As a result, Team Rocket are sent blasting off as usual... and although they once again leave with no Pokémon James is cheered up by his teammates attempt to help him.

Inside the Pokémon Center, Ash and Dawn are once again at the trade machine and now they're both certain they're doing the right thing. Ash and Dawn place Aipom and Buizel's Poké Balls into the slots and pull the exchange lever together, and the trade is completed, with Ash receiving Buizel and Dawn receiving Aipom. Both trainers send out their new Pokémon, and Ash tells Buizel he can't wait until the next Gym Battle, while Dawn can't wait to use Aipom in the Solaceon Contest. It may have been a difficult decision, but it's now clear it was the right one.
