Badge 1: Littleroot Town to Rustboro City
After Professor Birch's talk on Pokémon, you will end up in a pickup truck. The family has moved from Johto to Hoenn, but head out, into your house, set your clock and listen to your mom. After that, head to your rivals house, but her mom will tell you she's not here. Head north and rescue prof. birch.
After that, you will engage in battle with a level 2/3 poocheena. After defeating him, the professer will take you to his lab and tell you to go to Route 103. After that, head to Oldale Town, the first town with a pokémon center.
Head north of town and collect a pair of running shoes from your mom. Head north to Route 103. On your way, you will meet a old guy. Talk to him to get a free potion. After that, head north, and you finally will battle with May, you rival.
Rival Battle 1
Mudkip/Treecko/Torchic Lv.5
This battle should be easy. Just keep using tackle/scratch and May should be done in no time.
(PS. It is rumored that you get poisoned after defeating May, but that is untrue.)
After the battle, you will notice that to follow Route 103, you require surf. So follow her back to the Pokémon lab, where the professer will give you a poké ball. Leave Littleroot Town again, head to Oladale Town and buy some items at the Pokémart. After that, head west and leave Oldale through Route 102.

After the above two battles, head north to battle a trainer.

After battling, head north-east to pick some berries. After picking, head west for more trainers.

Should be pretty easy by now. Your starter should be at level 8-12 now.
After beating her, head south to pick up a item. Then head back up and continue west. You will arrive at Petalburg City. Head to the Gym, but your dad says he can't battle you until you have 3 badges, but instead tells you to go and help Wally, your second rival, to catch a pokemon.
