This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Red and Blue. This walkthrough follows the original Game Boy version, not Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The guide for those can be found here.

Route1

Encountering a wild Rattata

There are only two wild Pokémon that can possibly be encountered on Route 1: Pidgey and Rattata. Walk in the tall grass and you will encounter them. Train against both of them by fighting them and gaining experience.

If your Pokémon is almost out of HP, return to Pallet Town and talk to Mom, or head on to Viridian City and use the Pokémon Center. You should have trained to get to at least level 8 by the time you get to Viridian City. This boring training will pay off, as it will make it easier to fight trainers later.

Viridian City

Here's how to heal your Pokémon

Now you can explore Viridian City. There are not many things you can do yet.

As soon as you go into the city, you should see a Pokémon Center. This is a place where you can heal your Pokémon back to perfection. Using a Pokémon Center is simple. Just walk up to the woman at the counter and press A. She'll ask you if you want your Pokémon healed. Just select: HEAL. At the east side of the Pokémon Center, you can use the PC to store Pokémon and items. There are three people in this Pokémon Center, none of whom do anything worth while, besides give you tips.

If you go far to the north, there will be an old man laying down and a girl standing next to him. If you try to pass, he will tell you you can't. There's nothing of interest in the house to the east of them, just a man and his daughter who don't do anything important. To the south of that house is a Pokémon Trainers School which has only one student. She is reading a notebook that you can read too. It gives some tips about how to play the game. Southeast of the School is a Poké Mart. You need to enter here to move on.

The man at the counter gives you an Parcel to give to Professor Oak

When you enter the Poké Mart, immediatly the man at the counter asks you if you're from Pallet Town. He then tells you to deliver a package to Professor Oak. This package doesn't do anything for you, so you just have to deliver it. He won't let you buy anything from the Mart either, until you deliver the Parcel. And so, you have to head on back to Pallet Town.

Upon delivering the Parcel to Professor Oak, your rival returns to the lab. He then gives both of you Pokédexes, which you will use to record the data of (hopefully) every Pokémon in existence! Apparently, this was Professor Oak's quest before he got really old.

After recieving the Pokédex, your rival will jeer that he doesn't need you to complete his Pokédex and that he'll get a Town Map from his sister and ask her not to give you one. Despite his clever plan, you can just head on over to his house and his sister will give you one anyway.

Finally Catching Pokémon

Now head back up to Viridian City and, what the heck, why not train a bit more? Try to get to level ten for now.

Once back in the City, head to the Poké Mart and buy 5 Poké Balls. Now head north and you'll notice that the old man blocking the road before has now "had his coffee" and "feels great!" If you tell him that you're not in a hurry, he will show you how to capture a Pokémon.

Head back south to the nearest patch of tall grass and catch a Pidgey and a Rattata. Raise them both to the same level as your starter Pokémon by training them against other wild Pokémon, just like you did before.

If you go west just when you get to Viridian, you'll be on Route 22, where you can capture Rattata, Spearow, and Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀. If you catch all these, you should have six pages of your Pokédex filled. Not a bad start! You're well on your way to having a great Pokémon adventure!

Battle: Rival (again!)

Here you run into the rival, who will challenge you again

Further along Route 22, you'll find your rival. This battle won't be very hard if you've got at least two party members that are level 10 or higher. He has a level 9 Pidgey and his starter Pokémon is at level 8. You don't have to challenge him here yet, but you will have to eventually. Heal your Pokémon and then buy some more Poké Balls. Now head north past the old man who had his coffee and you'll be on Route 3. There's only one patch of tall grass here. These Pokémon should be about the same as the ones on Route 1. You can't do anything interesting on this Route yet because you don't have HM01, CUT - which will be very important and useful later. You see those weird-shaped trees blocking the paths west of Route 3? Those are trees that can be cut once you beat Misty in the Cerulean City Gym. Just go north through that building and you'll be in the Viridian Forest -

a whole new area with new Pokémon to catch!

Battle: Rival (again!)

On Route 22, you'll also encounter your Rival again. This battle is optional, but it's a great way to gain more experience. He's been training too, though, so better make sure your Pokémon are in good shape before taking him on.
