  • The number of Japanese Promotional cards produced compared to that of those in English is immense. Wizards of the Coast did not have the resources to translate and reproduce all of these cards, so many of these cards remain exclusive to Japan.
  • Before the use of the "PROMO" symbol on Promotional cards (first introduced in mid-2001), many of the unnumbered Promotional cards had unique symbols and stamps. Even though Japanese Promotional cards have adopted a numbering system for some time now, several cards are still released through tournaments that have no number or symbol. More recent releases feature the black star "PROMO" symbol and no number, while the "Victory" Trainer cards acquired at Battle Road tournaments and conferences feature nothing, perhaps to reflect their scarcity.
  • This collection contains some of the rarest Pokémon cards in the world, as they were only available through exclusive events and limited to extremely small print runs. The rarest cards are the Trophy cards awarded to those in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in tournaments. It is debated that Trophy cards released between 2000 and 2002 are rarer than those released between 1997 and 1999, as they include the names of the winners, therefore making each card unique. The most well-known of these Trophy cards are the Pikachu Trophy cards from the First Official Tournaments and the Tropical Mega Battle Trainers, their numbers limited to nine in the world. American collectors can expect to pay between $8000 and $12,000 for each of these.
  • A number of cards (predominantly Trophy cards) featured a unique rarity symbol of two stars, similar to how Shining Pokémon featured three stars. This rarity symbol was no longer used on cards with the beginning of the 2002 season.
  • Rare event cards such as Victory Orb, Championship Arena, Time Warp and Pearl Amulet feature a holographic border, previously featured on Pokémon ex and more recently Pokémon Lv. X.
