It's Super Effective is a Pokémon-centric podcast hosted by Steve Black Jr., also known by his initials SBJ, and is the flagship show of PKMNcast.com. It's Super Effective began on July 26, 2010, two days after the launch of the website, which began as PokémonPodcast.com.
Podcast
Features
- Introduction - Steve usually begins with "what's up everybody" and introduces the cast members.
- News - The hosts discuss recent events in the Pokémon community.
- ExtremeSpeed - Steve and occasionally another cast member grill another cast member (usually a new guest) with a string of questions, usually pertaining to a personal preference between two Types, Pokémon, or Items.
- Featured Team - Steve and the cast give comments and constructive criticism on a listener's submitted team of Pokémon. Steve has said that this is reminiscent of a similar feature in Nintendo Power magazines he read in his childhood.
Guests
These people have made one or two appearances on the show, either as a co-host or as an interviewee.
- D’Andre Siggas ("Black Man Loves Pokémon" viral video)
- Christopher Niosi (Khoury's English dub voice actor)
- Marriland
- eSeamus of Bouncing Wailord
- Juan Saucedo
- Ryan Kubo
- Kidd Starck
- Chris Illich
Inside jokes and running gags
- Quick Claw Guy - A hypothetical listener of the show who despises Steve's acceptance of Quick Claw as a viable competitive held item.
- "In the face, in the face, in the face!" - A reference to an episode in which Steve suddenly started the show by repeating the last three words Travis had said during the pre-show chatter.
- New New Mexico - A newly founded sovereign kingdom on the Moon, over which Saul is the king.
- The Pichu/Cleffa Dilemma - A thought experiment performed by Steve at the end of each Extremespeed segment in which the guest is presented with the question "Pichu or Cleffa?". The guest will always choose Pichu.
- Kenny and Bayleef - Kenny has an obsession with Chikorita's first evolution.
- Nobody likes Vanilluxe but Travis - No one likes the Snowstorm Pokémon except for Travis.
- Mewtwo Herder - Travis states, "I been herdin' mah Mewtwo 'bout as long as the sun's been shinin'."
- Sand-Attack - Just as it is early in the games, Sand-Attack was a point of hatred (especially for ex-co-host Catie) early in ISE's history.
- Master Ball captured Golduck - Steve used his first Master Ball on a Golduck.
- Nobody knows/likes Huntail - The podcast's hosts view Huntail as a forgotten and under-loved member of the Pokémon fandom.
Episode titles
Since its debut in 2010, the podcast has followed a naming convention for the titles of each episode, which changes every ten episodes:
Episodes | Naming theme |
---|---|
1-10 | "[Subject A] to [Subject B]" |
11-20 | "Pokémon [Color or Object] Version" |
21-30 | "The [Subject]" |
31-40 | "S.U.B.J.E.C.T." |
41-50 | Jay-Z songs |
51-60 | "[Letter] as in [Subject starting with letter]" (Sesame Street) |
61-70 | Films |
71-80 | Palindromes |
81-90 | The Simpsons episode titles |
