Harley: Difference between revisions

Harley first competed against {{an|May}} in ''[[AG103|A Cacturne for the Worse!]]''. When the two Coordinators met, Harley was annoyed at May for several petty reasons: she was not familiar with his Cacturne, she called Cacturne "scary," and she said the the cookies he offered her "weren't half bad". Later, the two competed in a {{pkmn|Contest}}, Harley using Cacturne and May using {{TP|May|Bulbasaur}}. During the appeals round, he mentions that he doesn't want anyone to talk during their performance. After that round, in an attempt to publicly humiliate May, Harley played a recording of Max recalling a time when May was younger and she became stuck in water with a swarm of {{p|Tentacool}} and was extremely frightened. May was embarrassed, but went on to defeat Harley.

Harley competed in the contest using Cacturne for the appeals and Ariados for the battles. He defeated [[Jessie]] who entered with {{TP|Jessie|Wobbuffet}}, but was defeated himself by May and her {{p|Squirtle}} in the finals.

Harley has a rather peculiar personality. He is undeniably flamboyant, wearing an outfit similar in appearance to {{p|Cacturne}}. He has very effeminate mannerisms, which include wiggling his hips as he walks and using アタシ ''atashi'', the Japanese feminine version of ''I''. He also has a tendency to use select English words intermixed with his normal Japanese speech; for example, he calls {{TP|Harley|Cacturne}} and {{TP|Harley|Banette}} ''my buddies'' or darling, sweeties, and honey and tells {{an|May}} ''good morning''. In the Latin-American dub, this is replaced by using Latin-American slang and allusions to local urban culture; for example, he sings a song by the Mexican showman Juan Gabriel in the Grand Festival, as his {{p|Octillery}} dances in the flames. He talks with a high voice, another sign of effeminacy.  Another example of his feminine side is in ''[[AG180|May, We Harley Drew'd Ya!]]'' where Harley cross-dresses as May, calling himself "Mayley" (Japanese: ハールカ ''Harruka''), much to May's embarrassment and [[Solidad]]'s amusement. He is apparently old friends with Solidad, as she said so herself.

Banette debuted during the [[Hoenn]] [[Grand Festival]] in the episode ''[[AG122|Deceit and Assist!]]'' when Harley used it in double battle against {{an|May}} alongside Cacturne. It reappeared in ''[[AG174|New Plot, Odd Lot!]]'' and ''[[AG175|Going for Choke!]]'' when Harley lent his Banette to [[Jessie]] in an attempt to help her beat May in the final [[Pokémon Contest]] before the [[Grand Festival]] in an attempt to prevent May from entering. Because it was unfamiliar with her, Jessie continued to tell Banette to use {{m|Frustration}}. This eventually resulted in Jessie's loss to May. Harley also used Banette in the [[appeals round]] during the [[Kanto Grand Festival]] in ''[[AG180|May, We Harley Drew'd Ya!]]''.

Its Japanese voice actresses are 大谷育江 ''[[Ikue Ohtani]]'' and 西村ちなみ ''[[Chinami Nishimura]]'' (during Ohtani's leave) and in English it is voiced by [[Darren Dunstan]] ([[4Kids Entertainment|4Kids]] dub) and [[Jimmy Zoppi|Billy Beach]] ([[Pokémon USA]] dub).}}

{{trainerpkmn|note=|main=no|Harley|Ariados|{{bug color}}|Harley Ariados.png|Ariados first appeared in ''[[AG143|The Saffron Con]]'', and Harley also used it in the [[AG144|following episode]] in the [[Saffron City]] {{pkmn|contest}}. It battled against [[May's Squirtle]], but the young Pokémon ended up defeating it by using {{m|Ice Beam}}. It also appeared in ''[[AG160|Harley Rides Again]]'' performing in the appeal round of the [[Wisteria Town]] Contest, and in ''[[AG173|New Plot, Old Lot]]'', where it was borrowed by [[James]] and {{MTR}} and used to sabotage {{an|May}}'s appeal by secretly shooting its {{m|Spider Web|web}} at both her and her {{TP|May|Combusken|Blaziken}} from above the stage.

It battled alongside [[Harley's Cacturne]] against [[May's Eevee]] and {{TP|May|Munchlax}}, where Harley fully used its capability to expand its rubber-like body. After learning from [[Lilian Meridian|Lilian]] that Wigglytuff was the Balloon Pokémon, May quickly thought of a plan to utilize this to her advantage. Wigglytuff was eventually defeated by May's Munchlax's {{m|Focus Punch}}, with the help of Eevee.
